Try the AOSB(Android Open Source Bam Project) rom http://probam.net/. It is based on the latest CyanogenMod and is running KitKat 4.4.2. I use it on my Verizon S3 and it's great so far. Battery life is fine, lots of customization options, it's fast as far as I can tell. I thought it was worth a shot so I tried it and ended up liking it quite a bit.

this looks good i think i'll give it a shot tonight or whenever i get some time to re-rom. I'm kinda curious what it would bring to the table that CM doesn't though...I'll go read a bit about it.

That's before you actually start using it everyday. The Note 3 is awesome as a phablet, but not as a phone. The headpiece sound quality is horrible and the speaker is abysmal.
The Galaxy S3 was actually BETTER in that regard. I was doubting myself until I found a decibel comparison between most popular phones, and apparently both the Galaxy S3 and the iPhone have better sound than the Note 3. It looks like Samsung poured all the effort into the technical specs, but forgot it still needs to be a phone.

I am selling my Note 3, and will keep using my old Galaxy S3 until S5, HTC One TWO or Note 4 come out.

Oh and by the way, I used to post on these forums how much I love my Note 3 and how amazing the battery life it, but guess what... With LESS than average use, the battery now hardly lasts a day after only 6 months. In the beginning I'd still have around 40% late at night and continued use uncharged into the next day. Now, I am lucky if I have 19% at 10pm. : (

Interesting. My experience with my Note 3 was spectacular. I eventually sold it and got a Nexus 5 (it was a cost thing), but if money was no object I would have kept the Note 3. It's a better phone than the Nexus 5 hands down, in my opinion.

The battery and the sound (particularly the headphone output) was great. But to each his own.

Didn't a software update make it so the phone would never trigger that bug? I know it was a specific IO command that did it.

The fix has a rather low success rate and there are still dead S3's appearing after the fix was applied.

Overall the S3 was & is a great phone though.

No.

Install a Good AOSP Rom and it will feel like a new experience. I much prefer AOSP over Touchwiz but that's just me.

I have a Moto G. I am seriously impressed with the Moto G's performance. It handles everything I do, including games just fine. It's just slightly better in benchmarks than a S3, so I vote no. Plus you have 2GB of Ram and most likely KitKat coming to you eventually.

So...going further into this. I'm liking this AOSB thing you've linked. Thanks for that. I havent re-rommed my device in a real long time at this point. Do I just need to odin back to stock and then flash the new ROM? I'm hearing some stuff about this "KNOX" thing thats been implemented in the stock ROM, and I need to avoid it? Can anyone provide some insight?

Are you on a stock rom now? The version you are on makes the difference. Apparently some version introduced some measure to make the bootloader unable to unlock. XDA forums has more info. If you are on a custom rom just boot to CWM or TWRP recovery, backup, wipe data/cache, flash rom, flash google apps package for 4.4, and you're set.

I'm on a ROM called the devils reject. UCDLK3 is my baseband (?) I believe. Its android 4.1.1. I thought I needed to flash stock ROM because I think that's how I did it before. If not that would be even better. I almost gave it a shot tonight but ran outta time.

Nope you just go to your custom recovery and do a backup, then clear data and cache and flash the new ROM. You will need the latest Google apps package to flash as well. They don't come in the ROM itself.

Egggcelent. The AOSB page is saying to odin the latest CWM on there first too, so I can go ahead and do that since its quick and easy.

Screw AOSB. Slim Rom is best Rom. Rock solid stable haven't had a single random reboot in months.

Shoot I'll try em both. I've been meaning to start a thread recently about which ROM I should be using for my S3. The one I have currently has been great but he stopped developing it quite a while ago, so I might as well use something more current. AOSB looked like it had some good features. I'll check out slim rom now too.

Thank you folks!

Used to use that but it doesn't get updated enough and has almost no options. The customization is the whole reason to do a custom ROM anyway. Just stripping out apps doesn't accomplish anything in my view as you could just root and freeze them and get the same thing.

At this point you can do almost all your customization via Xposed modules anyway.

Which ones? I have navbar controls, status bar controls, a brand new (much better) recents menu, and most everything I can think of.

It gets updated every single week with a stable build once a month.

Don't do either of those. If you do you'll never be able to flash a custom ROM again.

Wow. And I bet its the new locks that have yet to be cracked.

That alone makes me not want to upgrade my S4 to a S5.

Yep, and it will probably never be cracked, at least on the S3. Most of the people with an S3 already have an unlocked bootloader (and all avoided the OTA because it was semi-expected). There's been some talk of getting kexec going again, but as far as I know nobody has actually done it yet.

wtf would Samsung retroactively lock the S3's boot loader? That's some high level BS.

I see no reason to upgrade. I'm still using my note 2 with the original battery and I'm getting close to 48 between charges. Like someone else said we will both get kit Kat. I'll upgrade when the note 4 comes out or if the iPhone 6 has a bigger screen but until then I'm perfectly happy with my note 2

They may not because the device is older now and many have moved on to newer devices to develop for. The s4, note 3, and now the upcoming s5

I'm on AOSB now and its glorious! Went from 4.1.1 to 4.4.1 too, some good stuff in there. Only thing I lost was my text messages and those should be purged from time to time anyways (if aaron hernandez has taught us anything!). Sexy as hell. New life has been breathed.
