Is there a nicely sorted list of Motorola phones?

Sorted by chrono and caliber hierarchy? (G-series? P-series? E-series? )
I want to know the upgrade path from Pure 2015.
Newer is not always a step up, and I don't want to downgrade or go parallel.

The P series is new, so far only confirmed to be coming out in China. In the US, its:

Z series (I'd say the X series is about equal but I think it's discontinued now)
G series
E series

The Z series and G series also have the Play or Force models, those are the low end of that series. Current US flagship for Moto in the US is the Z3, I think at least for carriers its a Verizon exclusive. The Z series use a system called Moto mods that has an accessory connector on the back of the phones that can be used for things like batteries, camera (Moto makes a Hasselblad camera mod with a physical zoom), and even a projector. The Z3 will use a Moto mod for 5g when it goes live for Verizon in their test markets. It has a different modem chip in it compaired to the phone and will only do 5g data while the phone does the calls and 4g data.

Thanks.
IF X and Z are higher lines, I will rule out G and E

Z3 will be too new for me.
Just want one gen. back.

So, looks like either
Moto X4
Moto Z2 Force/Play

Must it be a Motorola phone? There are some great deals to be had on phones if you shop around, like buy one get one free Samsung Galaxy S9s, $199 Galaxy S8, and free Moto E5.

I supposed I prefer a Motorola since the Pure was basically flawless.
S9 is way too expensive. I think $300 is a decent budget for me.

I've had several Motorola phones. My first was the Motorola Admiral (Blackberry clone). I loved the software on that old phone! One app took the place of 3, integrating "contacts", "dialer" and "messages" in one easy to use app. Thing is the Admiral was just too slow to be a good smartphone.

My Moto G first gen was pretty good except I hated the dialer. I was eventually forced to upgrade the OS and hated that too. One thing I did like was the flip case that made the phone act like a flip phone and automatically turn on upon opening without hitting any buttons or swiping or tapping anything.

My current phone is a Galaxy S8 that cost $199, well below your $300 budget cutoff. S7s are available under your stated budget as well. The hardware on the S8 is fantastic and the software isn't bad either. I like the software much, much better than what was on the Moto G. For example on the Samsung I was instantly able to turn off notifications for all apps with one switch. The silly Moto G makes you do it individually for each of dozens of apps. The Bixby button on the S8 is annoying but I figured out how to turn that off. I love the wireless charging. I like that the phone is water resistant as well.

Are the S7 and/or S8 a notable upgrade from the Moto X Pure?
If I get a newer phone, I don't want a parallel move, but a step forward.

I looked into X4 vs. Z2 Force

CPU, both will be an upgrade from Pure
Both have dual camera. I like bokeh
Both have removable micro-SD
Both are 4GB/64GB
Battery. 2700 vs. 3000mAh
Both have Turbo charging.

X4: I like bright screens, so IPS wins ?

X4 used: $200
Z2 Force used: $300

Is there anything the X4 beats the Z2 Force in ?
It seems Z2 Force is more "current" and active (more for sale, etc)
Plus, if buying used, the discount from $700 to $300+
seems better than the discount from $350 to $200.

I am now leaning towards Force.

Our S8 have pretty solid processors but we don't notice that so much over our previous slower phones. We notice stuff like the great screen, the improvement in software, the fast charging and the wireless charging, as well as the fact that the S8 is water resistant. We like USB-C because it is symmetrical and reversible and doesn't matter which way you plug it in. USB-C also seem more substantial physically than micro USB. We notice the huge screen to body ratio but we just don't really use the fast processor for anything in daily use (I downloaded a 3D benchmark to showcase the CPU but that was just a one time deal).

Your mileage may vary. You may need more CPU grunt.

Curiously I still use my old phone because I don't want to tear up the S8 at work. The S8 sits in a protected office at work and I carry my old phone (with no cell service) which uses Google Voice and the new phone's hotspot to function. The point being that the old phone is fine for daily use even though it is far inferior to the S8 on paper. I go back and forth between the S8 and my 5 year old Moto G seamlessly. Sure the S8 is nicer but the Moto G is fine.

Point being your "pure" might be fine for your purposes (you describe it as "flawless") and you might not like any new phone.

Dude, like is too short to live with OCD and plastic covers on your sofa.
Toss your old phone and start to live, and use the damn S8.

I do use the S8 outside of work. My job can be fairly blue collar at times and the old phone is fine, really, that was my point. I mean sure the S8 is better but you really don't notice so much.

I got the S8 at T-Mobile the last day of the sale evidently. I think they are doing buy one get one free S9s now.

There are conditions on the $199 S8, the selling price is $600 but they forgive $401 over 2 years if you finance interest free and keep T-Mobile for 2 years. It is going to cost me $8.29 a month for 2 years. If I cancel the service before 2 years I'd owe the balance on the $600.

I have a G5 plus currently. Totally unlocked for any carrier and a good battery. I am not happy that Motorola excludes the US market for the G6 plus. I would suggest getting LG, Samsung, Apple or HTC for high end phones. I do like the vanilla Android software with no bloatware that Moto offers.

Phones are too expensive today. But I do admire the picture quality of the flagship phones.

I've seen carrier unlocked Moto X4 phones as low as $229 on Amazon (brand new) but I think the Amazon SKU has ads on the lockscreen and for that reason cannot be bootloader unlocked. The better version is the one sold thru Google Play which has a pure build of Android One and is Project Fi capable (I think it already has Android P, or else will have it in a few weeks?)

The Moto X Pure 2015 was a great phone hardware wise, but software support and development ended as soon as Google sold Moto to Lenovo. For that reason, I'm not sure I'd trust Moto to deliver new builds on time?
