Is there a PC way to tell someone....

That their porn habits are what is making it so their computer keeps getting messed up? These are family members and I can't think of a gentle way of saying this.

Or...does anyone know of software that would make it harder for spyware/malware to install? I have installed spybot, adaware and anti virus but they keep getting infected.

The only software that's truly reliable is a brain. If the user is an idiot nothing is going to help. Tell them the hard facts, it's not like they don't know that they're downloading porn. Teach them to get it in a safer manner and stop fixing the computer.

The irony is that even with my web surfing habits, I haven't had a serious infection in years. I could care less what sites they go to and how much midget donkey porn they watch...I just get tired of having to clean up the mess afterwards.

You could try installing Firefox, adblock, and noscript. That will kill much of the malware.

So either:

1. Stop fixing it
2. Teach them a few things

"no porn will ever require an installation or end in .exe" is my typical line

Educate them on how to avoid the bad sites.
If it says "Click here to download" and it's an EXE, 1) it's a bad file, 2) It's a bad site.

Too many people though seem to lack basic Pavlovian responses. "If I do this, my computer gets screwed up. Maybe I should stop doing that."

There are many many terabytes of porn available out there with minimal risk of problems. So I've been told.

If they keep asking you to fix it tell them straight up. One of 2 thing will happen, 1) they're more careful when looking for porn or 2) they no longer ask you to fix their PC because they're embarrassed. Either way it's a win for you unless they keep searching for porn and don't give a damn what you think then it's just creepy and you need new family members! :Q

I know it's hard to confront family members with private matters like these, so to help you I've written a script you can read verbatim to the offending family member.

Your incessant fapping has resulted in unwanted electronic viral infections and odd residues along with unpleasant odors. Please cease and desist patronizing web pages that feature graphic images and depictions of animal passions and midget couplings. If you refrain to follow these directions I will be forced to release your name and image to the press along with your queer affinities for lewd uses of pointed vegetation.

I guarantee if you read this to the offending family member you should'nt have future problems with viruses on his PC.

This isn't necessarily related to porn (although in this case I'm guessing you have proof). Any moron who opens random email attachments or spam, clicks banner ads or installs whatever the hell is prompted on their screen is at risk.

And yea, maybe direct them to some sites that don't require any of the above to get their fix .

I tell all the people I do PC work for the same thing right off the bat whenever there is a problem.

"Stop downloading effing porn"

Wether its a fried PSU or they bought a new mouse and need me to connect it I tell them the same thing. If you say it all funny like they think your joking but Im really not. The guilty ones will sweat it though I am sure.

Some people just don't know how to safely search the internet. Same thing happened with friends of mine. They just don't understand the difference between real links and fake ones.

why be PC about it?....if they are routinely doing the same thing over and over and you have told them time and time again how to avoid it and they are continuously a pain in the ass because they are consistently asking you to fix their mess?...hell with it...call them out in front of some other family members and shame them.....it'll either stop...or they will just stop calling you....either way you win.

The easiest way is to take a list of all the porn sites that they go to and send an email from their accout to everyone in the mailing list,

Either they will stop because of the shame or might get some new sites that are not as risky.

That would only result in more computers getting infected.
