Is there a site that you recommend that could give advice on how to promote a website?

Might be the one in his signature - http://www.besthealthboards.com/boards/

If that's it, my recommendation is to build a site with a lot of useful content that strikes up discussions and makes people want to research further, which brings them to the forum.

It's not the one in my sig. I can't seem to get anywhere with that so I'm trying again.

I hope I can double my users on the new site. Imagine 8 whole users!!!!!!!

That site has just what I said - content that brings people there, but then a forum to allow them to research further and carry on discussions, that's what a forum is for. Changing the title of a forum, slapping it on a domain, and then make some posts to get it started is not all that's involved.

A strong reader base is easier to turn into active forum members rather than people coming across it randomly from a link on some website.

The site you linked to has plenty of information on cities and states with pictures. This drives the people there and gets them interested, then they move to the forum for more information.

Since I don't have content that would drive people to the site, does anyone think that advertising the site in newspapers and possibly, radio ads, would have any benefit?

No since there is no content.

Conent is king, or freebies or purdy designs or all of the above.

They might visit once but what you want are REPEAT visitors.

Even if I have content, how do you draw people to a site with content?

Isn't google ranking based a great deal upon how many 'legitimate' links there are to your site?

Search engine ranking can be complicated. Yes, links matter. Go out and find related sites and ask to exchange links.

I do this consulting for a living. Some suggestions:
1. Master the search engines. seochat.com but there are tons of other forums too
2. Pay per click. don't start with google, too expensive; start with cheapies like yahoo, msn etc and figure out what works before spending google-type money
3. site link in sigs. post at a bunch of sites and you get a lot of response
4. links exchanged with other sites, as mentioned
5. write articles for web sites/magazines on your topic. They get spread around a lot. Submit to free submission sites.
6. contests, free giveaways, design-a-logo stuff, etc
7. partner with sites with similar aims - this works especially well on locally themed stuff.
8. online PR. start with free PR submission services to get your feet wet.
9. off-line PR. local papers love "local person makes web site" articles - get a HS or college journalism student to write your PR release for you
9. become an expert, get listed in expert sites
10. free directories (mostly worthless, but every little bit helps) don't pay for a directory listing until you have a good ideal what you're doing
11. Blog - link your site to your blog. really helps the search engines - new content on a regular basis.
12. Ebay - sell a e-report for 99 cents on one of the topics from your forum, and include a link to your forum in the e-report; there are ebay rules on this, but it's worth learning the rules. It's fun to get PAID for getting visitors

Hope this helps a bit. Good luck. We all started where you are, and worked our way up.

princess ida, thank you for making your first Anandtech forum post a reply to my post. I appeciate the advice.

Regarding your suggestions:
2) I had been looking at adwords but I will look into the other opportunites like you mentioned.
3) I thought about that but it kind of feels like spamming
7) I had contacted a couple of locally themed sites (like mine). They didn't have any interest in partnering. I think it was because our goals are similiar--to obtain local advertising revenue.
9) off-line PR. My local paper wouldn't print the press release because my site offers some of the features they have been planning to add to their site.
12) I was thinking about something very similiar to that. Thanks for giving me more confidence in pursuing this avenue.

What is your opinion of the value of good meta tags? A waste of time or a necessity?

I wonder if advertising on a billboard would increase traffic enough to make it worthwhile...
