Sorry, but a pimple does not a weapon make.
You run the risk of getting charged under PL 265.01 (NY state law) if you carry pretty much any of what's been suggested with the intention of self defense (locking knives, fixed blades, clubs, etc). If you carry anything, it needs to be a "tool" you use during your day, never something for "self defense". A large bright flashlight or metal pen would probably be your best bet.

Well, if you are a 4th degree blackbellt and you beat the crap out of someone and it gets reported I think they can flag you. What that means I dont know, but I heard something like that.

Riiight.
Yeah I heard that, in grade school. By the time I was in junior high I realized it was BULLSHIT!
so basically, i was right
as long as you are a plumber or maintenance guy
In that case, a flat screw driver. Actually, do they make battery operated solder irons? That could work nicely.
Pretty much but even then it can be an issue. I don't have a link to the story but I have heard of carpenters being pulled over (for whatever reason) and then being arrested for carrying a dangerous weapon (pl 265.01) for having a hammer in reach in the passenger seat. Or a construction worker who had a multitool (probably one of the leatherman's with locking blades) on his belt while on the job going between the worksite and his vehicle (heard this one on another forum from a retired NYPD who still regularly meets with higher ups in the NYPD). I don't know how many of these guys were prosecuted or how many had pled/gotten the charges dropped but the arrest is still on record. NYC is not friendly to self defense D:
A neighbor of mine used to go for walks in a place that had a couple off leash dogs that were aggressive bastards. After nearly losing a chunk of her leg to one of them (and the owners doing nothing along with police/animal control doing nothing) she took the skinny, flexible end of a fishing pole and glued a bunch of heavy gauge washers to the end and then wrapped it in duct tape. It was nimble enough to slip up a coat sleeve and slide down and whipped with little effort. A couple whacks in the head and the dogs learned not to mess with her. That thing was really wicked. I wouldn't want to get hit with it.
In NYC there is a new craze among teens. They'll attack anyone at random and try to scar them, or knock them out in one blow. Usually, it will start with them asking for the time or something mundane like that.
This is driving me mad. 2 people in my area were attacked or spit on in the last week. In NYC, it is impossible to get a conceal carry license, unless your work requires it, or you are incredibly rich or a politician.
There's seriously no way to defend yourself without breaking the law.
Is there a such thing as a legal weapon? I know folding knifes under 3" are allowed in NYC, but in the heat of being attacked, I don't think this is a safe option. I'd probably get more hurt myself trying to unflip it.
Anyone know? What could be an easily hide-able common object that can be used as a weapon?
Get a 4, 5 or 6 D Cell Maglite flashlight. A 4 D cell would probably be enough. You could probably holster it and should be legal. People would just think you work in maintenance.

I wasn't joking, that's what a cousin told me about it being required or to be implemented in CA. Of course I gave him a look and told him "no way" that can be legal. D:
Where the hell in NYC do you live where this is an issue?
East Tremont in The Bronx. The Dominicans and Blacks have been really at it lately. There have been 2 murders in the last 6 months here, and there have been a rash of attacks within 2 blocks of me.
