Linux newbie here. I've recently installed Mandrake 8.2 and am starting to like Linux more and more everyday. It's been a humbling experience having to relearn alot of things i've taken for granted in windows, but i'm getting there. I've learned alot just from doing basic things like installing programs (was trying to get LimeWire working, which involved installing a java virtual machine, took about 3 hours to figure this out ) and installing nvidia drivers (took about 1 hour to figure out and get working). Anyways, enough rambling, to my question.

I can't seem to find the task manager in KDE (if there is one). I was trying to run the Mandrake update thing, and it basicly froze trying to 'update the database for sources'. I couldn't figure out how to kill the program. I know about using 'kill %' and 'jobs' in the console, but it doesn't list the jobs running in x windows. I'm using KDE 2.something as my GUI. So... is there a way to kill non-responding programs in KDE without restarting the x-server?

Thanks in advance

'top'
'ps -ef'
if you want GUI, KDE has 'ktop' and Gnome has 'gtop', both applications extend the functionality of 'top'.

edit: if you are trying to kill a hung process use 'kill pid' to send it a TERM signal and allow it to shutdown gracefully. If the process does not respond to SIGTERM, kill it with -9 or -KILL switch. If the application is question is an X client and the window still does not "want to go away", as a last resort you can use 'xkill' to disconnect the client from the server.

Hi Paragon,

ktop is what you are looking for. So you're running KDE 2.2 eh? I just installed Mandrake 8.2 on my machine and upgraded KDE to 3.0.2. I'm putting together a how-to to drive KDE up to this version for Mandrake 8.2 machines. Check out bajaar.com in a couple of hours.

Another way of killing frozen apps is by pressing ctrl+alt+escape. That turns your pointer into a skull and cross bones which you then use to click on your frozen app and it kills.

I think top is one of the very few things I use a commad-line version of the program instead of a GUI version. Guess it's just what I was used to (I use it a lot on my own machine but also in a Solaris lab, where there is no GUI version).

I'm sure if you're starting from sratch though and don't plan on using a non-Linux Unix then the GUI way is the way to go.
