Is there a way to lock a file so it cannot be deleted?

I am running Windows XP Pro. I am looking for a way to prevent a file from being deleted. For example, I am on a college network and if I wanted to put a file on a public drive on the network, but wanted to make sure it could not be deleted by other users, how can I do this? (can windows do this or do i need a program to do this?)

When you share the folder, only give users Read permission.

Yep. Either use share level or NTFS file level permissions to only grant read access.

The drive has to be formatted NTFS, permissions for all accounts should be set to read only.

No, I am talking about putting a file on a public server drive that belongs to the university. In other words, I have no control over the network settings. Any other advice?

By what method are you putting it up? Do you have a shell account that it is ftp/scp-ed into?

It is a mapped network drive that you can add and remove files from. I have to type in my user name and password, then it allows me access to this network drive.

It depends on the server. If you have to type your username and password, then most likely you're the only one with access to it, period.

The solution was given above. Use NTFS and use security settings to set file or its folder as read only for all users but yourself. It will override network permissions.

if the file is always in use ... it cannot be deleted ....

ie ... if you have a shell account sign on and continuously redownload the file ... if you can set a speed limmit set it really low so it doesnt eat any bandwith on the network.

how about hiding the file..
