Is there a way to set the speed of the stock cooler on a GPU?

Just picked up a 7800GS for the MediaCenter. Since I can't buy a NVSilencer for it I am forced to use the stock cooler for now. The fan seems to speed up during gameplay because sometimes I notice the card other times its silent. Is there a way i can just set the card to run at low rpm during say DVD playback. During the day the noise is no biggy, at night watching some movie with the volume turned down is a pain.

Sorry I should of put in, without using a fan controller or modding the hardware. Also if you do know of a silent cooler for this card , feel free to say so. And to anyone reading considering this card, its not really that loud I just want super quiet.

QFT. I do a similar thing on my X800XTPE with ATI Tools (i.e. lowered idle from 67% to 50%, and can barely hear it over the case). Had a neglible affect on temps, but your experience might be different with the 7800GS. Just experiment with Rivatuner with an eye on minimizing temp differentials (i.e. make sure it ramps up appropriately for gaming).

Cool thanks for the tip. I have used RivaTuner in the past a little bit. Real quick, if I edit the fan speeds but then later don't want the RivaTuner changes can I just uninstall without any affect to the card? Or say for warranty purposes , will it change the settings to where BFG would know it?

And I see the fan area under power user. Can anyone give a brief how to set this up. How can I tell what the rpm of the fan is now? Whats the skinny on setting this up?

your not doing anything to the card itself with riva... not unlocking it or nething jsu controlling fans which was something you could do neways i believe, so it shoiudlnt be ne prpoblem

If anyone knows and if it is a similar process for most GPU's what do I change or how to I start to slow down the GPU fan. Is there a way to monitor the fans current speed and maybe just set it up when not gaming to run slightly slower but gaming full noisy speed.

You can do that with Riva tuner. With the 7800 series cards you can set fan speeds for 2D, low 3D, and performance 3D.
