The sata connectors have dissolved into the connector end and now there are just stubs on the hard drive, the power connection is fine. I have no idea how this strange thing happened.

That is a bit weird.

Yes I'd say you can fix that but I'm not sure if it would be worth it.

The board is really easy to take off. You can send it in and get the firmware copied to a new board. Then run the drive with the new board.

If you are really handy you can just buy a new board and transfer the chip over yourself.

BTW they say you can't just put on a new board. You need the info about bad sectors or some such from the old board.

Also it would be good to know what the heck happened to the old drive. Did it get hit by lightning or have acid spilled on it?

Now I remember exactly what happened, the small plastic L shaped guide came off with the plug end so it would not seat, so I put a dab of epoxy on the outer edge but some of it must have migrated onto the hd posts and rotted them. It seemed like a good idea at the time . The only thing I wanted off it is ( i think) it was a win 8 that was offered online thru microsoft and I dont have the activation key!!!

You might be able to just solder on a new SATA plug? Or chop the end off of a SATA cable and solder the wires directly? Not sure how backyard you are willing to go on this project...

Lakedude is likely right, and sorry to bring this up 3 days later (haha). Soldering on a new SATA connector would be the best *temporary* solution.
