I've been told that you should always hook speakers up in pairs (besides teh center chanel). I want to hook up just one 8 ohm speaker to a reciever? should I hook it up to both channels? I there is a way you can wire the two channels together so taht they = 8 ohms. Maybe it cant be done, but it would be nice.

Depending on the receiver, you may blow a it if you do not connect a load to one of the outputs. However, it would be very poorly designed in this case. You'll PROBABLY be okay if you don't use one of the channels.

 technically, you should "load" both channels. However, if you are not loading one channel then keep the volume for the "unloaded" channel off (all the way down) and if the receiver have FADER, keep the fader all the way to the active channel only. However, this does not guarantee FAILURE to occur later. Depending on the receiver design, there is a possibility that the unloaded channel will have some component overheat and breaks eventually.

Some receiver have a MONO mode wherein the POWER AMPS are wired to drive one common speaker (only the + side of the amps is connected to the speakers). This is technically termed "BRIDGE or BRIDGING". Check your receiver user's manual.
