Is there a webmail service better than GMAIL?

I've had a gmail account for like 8 years and I'm still trying to get a sense of its capabilities... I'm sure most of you are fairly familiar with these complaints.

1. No wildcard support (ever feel confident doing a search without it?)
2. No sorting (good searching requires it once you have your results)
3. Cannot view more than 20 search results at a time without selecting/deleting all of them. (terrible oversight)

Can anyone recommend a service that supports these features as well as the great spam filters in gmail?

Why not use a separate mail client with Gmail? I hate webmail formats, so Thunderbird, or evolution is a standard install for me. You could also try Opera's built in email. I've only played with it briefly, but I like the concept. I'll likely be making Opera my standard portable browser. When you add in all the things it does, it saves considerable room on a thumb drive, and streamlines the process.

Thats a good point... Do you prefer those clients over Outlook (other than cost)? Maybe I should just start using Outlook but I want something to sync better than IMAP...

I prefer Thunderbird and Evolution due to them being open source. By being open source, my mail will never be held hostage by a proprietary format. My second isp was Earthlink, and when I left them, it was a real PITA to get my mail that I had stored, and I swore that would never happen again. Based purely on features, I don't know. All I can say is they work very well for my purposes.

I haven't given Opera a full workout yet, but it's a good browser if nothing else. Of course, that puts you back in the proprietary software category. That's ok for a secondary system, but it would give me pause using it for my primary client.

I wouldn't use webmail as a default email provider for a lot of the reasons mentioned. Every day companies are being targeted by people trying to hack their systems. Then there is the privacy aspect and not really knowing what the company is doing with your email.

Thunderbird is great and I have used it for years. Having your email on your machine only gives you total control.

So do you just remote home to get your personal mail?

I've been using the built in Opera mail client for years and can't imagine using anything else. never was a really big fan of Outlook or Thunderbird...

that said, there seems to be a bug with the current version of Opera that prevents the 'mail' icon from displaying consistently when new mail arrives. it just started occurring with the last version of browser....currently i'm using 11.11

You can't view more than 20 at a time, but you can go to the older results by just clicking on the "Older" button on the right side at the top and bottom of your search results. Clicking "Older" will bring you to the next 20 search results. Unless I totally misunderstood what you were saying...

I have my own domain and I use Windows Live Mail client. It works for me and I have COMPLETE control over my email. My host provider has a master spam filter program installed so I hardly ever get spam either.
