Is there a worse movie than Battlefield Earth? Yes, there is.

My wife felt like renting a video last night and against my better judgement, I suggested that she go and pick one out. She came back with Moulin Rouge which at first I thought probably wasn't that bad and was a movie that I had thought to see with her anyway at some point.

Holy crap, what a piece of sh!t that movie is. How could anyone think that this cacophony of frenetic images and discordant sound consituted something that could even remotely be labeled as movie entertainment. After about 30 minutes of forcing abuse to my eyes and ears I had to turn it off. I genuinely try to watch movies through to the end but this one had all my senses reeling.

Battleship Earth was intolerable nonsense but Moulin Rouge was a cinematic assault on my life.

Wow. I admit, Moulin Rouge was a very different movie, but I think it is one of the best movies I have ever seen.

If you didn't notice it, the movie is based on Orpheus and Eurydice from greek mythology. He sings to Hades, and enchants him enough to let Eurydice go, as long as he doesn't look back. On his way out of hades, he looks back out of fear that she's gone, and then he looses her. In Moulin Rouge, the ironic twist is that he looks back and get's the girl back, but then she dies, and thus escapes the underworld.

This movie is great because the point of it is to escape the underworld. Most movies just leave you there. The plots and themes of most movies simply concern the affairs of the underworld. They don't even aknowledge that there is something else other than "the underworld". The world could use a lot more movies like Moulin Rouge, that lift you out into something better.

(I didn't come up with this fantastic analysis by myself, my friend Pat helped me see it.)

And to think until this point in time I had you labelled as a rather level-headed individual! Message received, thanks for the info - the people (female in gender) who've been telling me to watch this one have all been saying how great it is, in stark contrast to how crappy it looks and sounds...

Battlefield Earth is the worst movie ever.

Moulin Rouge and Mission to Mars are okay.

I took it like a man and saw it with my ex last year.

Having never seen Battlefield Earth completely through, I cannot say that Moulin Rouge was worse. But I definately won't be tricked into watching it for anything short of getting laid.

lebe0024, yep, I knew the basis for the story beforehand but the overall style and presentation of the movie was obnoxious to say the least.

It was like dropping some bad acid and then sticking your head in a blender with a Picasso while your screams of agony are being drowned out by a Cindi Lauper montage of old top 40's.

Um....it's just not your type of movie. It's not my type either!

But for it's genre, it's a very very good film. It has overwhelming critical acclaim and it has won many awards so far.

If you want me to be honest, I think you already made up your mind before watching it and that's why you hate it so much. Try going into films with an open mind in the future.

Moulin Rouge was an excellent movie.

Battlefield Earth was just another crappy sci-fi movie that should have been straight to video. For a B-movie, it was pretty good.

During Mission to Mars I had to leave at the end because I was laughing so hard.

I didn't like Moulin Rouge either, I thought it was over the top and stunk. Definately not my type of movie.

Eyes Wide Shut is the worst movie ever made. Some really bad movies are actually funny because they are bad. EWS passed that point.

Yeah, I can definately say it's not my type of movie but I'll disagree with the keep an open mind part. As mentioned in my original post, I had and idea to see this movie with my wife anyway and I like movies in general. I don't really watch TV, just sports and news sometimes, but I love movies. I just couldn't bear watching this one any longer after the first 15 minutes or so. My wife also agreed that this was probably the worst movie she has ever almost seen.

Since I haven't taken the movie back yet, I am going to make another attempt to watch it. Maybe fast-forward through the parts I find obnoxious and see if I can at least get the story out of it.

I guess i shouldnt say Mission to MArs was the worst movie ever...when i saw it there was only 1 other group of people in the theater so we just openly mocked it the entire movie and were laughing our ass off...hell i still get enjoyment out of talking about how horrible a movie was...

its on the brink...i get enjoyment out of it as long as i dont think that they were trying to make a good movie...its not like those B movies...this one they were trying...as long as i dont think about that its funny...kinda like Lost In Space

the first 30 minutes of that movie were meant to be jarring, the rest isn't quite at that pace. you shouldn't have turned it off.

jjones,

I believe we use the same rating system. I have only turned off a video before it ended about 3 times in my life. If I do it is a declaration of the fact that I have wasted my money!! I force myself to watch every movie to the end. My vote for worst movie ever is a tie between Specimen with Mark-Paul Gosselaar (the star of Saved By the Bell) and John Q (a political commercial). Thanks for the info. I will wait for a freebie to see Moulin Rouge!!!

Now as for A.I., I have yet to decide if it is a Science Fiction masterpiece or a ridiculous waste of film!!!!

Some of what you are talking about is taste. Is it that you did not like the movie or was it poorly made and acted. Since I like sci-fi I liked Battlefield Earth, and Mission to Mars. But watching a movie about dancing or ballet will make my eyes water before I fall asleep, leave, or change the channel. I do not like chatty English movies like Educating Rita, Westerns, and most war movies either.

Eyes Wide Shut was a great movie, if you like monster trucks and Rambo however you probably wont like it.

I enjoyed the heck out Battlefield Earth too, it was purposefully cheesy to make a point, but I really enjoyed it, everyone hated on it because of the Scientology connection.

If you want a awful movie, how about Congo? That movie has no redeeming qualities, everything in it sucks! Only good thing in the entire movie is Bruce Campbell, but those bastards kill him after like 2 minutes!

Another movie notable for suckiness is Volcano :disgust:
