Get a basic Virtual Server and run things yourself. VM's are typically hosted on higher quality servers with more redunancy (aka cloud).

Good and cheap do not mix when it comes to hosting. It's not that there aren't good hosting services out there, it's that you're too cheap to pay for them.

That's actually pretty decent.

I'm on a host right now that is kind of flaking out. Their site is down, they're moving and making changes, put a freeze on new accounts etc. I don't know what is going on with them.

They're much better than my previous host though. My site was down every few days with them.

Hosting costs:

Hardware - Server-quality hardware is expensive, although this can be lessened by using consumer-grade hardware and redundancy--still requiring thousands and thousands of dollars.
Data Center Space - Is expensive because it needs to be cooled 24/7, have connections to multiple major internet backbones, be staffed 24/7 with CCTV and onsite security as well competent on-site technitions.
Power
Software - Although most server OS' are free, if you want a web hosting panel that is extra cost incurred by your host.
Support - Think of your expectations concerning 24/7 support and response times and think about how much you get paid.

This is why web hosts have to put hundreds of people on each shared web hosting server. The economics do not work otherwise unless you actually pay more than a cup of coffee a month for the service.

Yes, just depends on those sites & what they do, along with the type of VM you have. What TB said will probably get you a 1-2 website host.

Futurehosting specializes in Virtual private servers and dedicated servers, which will cost more then a shared host.

I have been using hostgator for probably 4 years now, and have no complaints.

My main forum is hosted a Futurehosting, and runs a dual quad core Xeon dedicated server.

My blog and smaller forums run on a shared server at hostgator.
