Hello, I've been rejected by AMEX blue for students citi platinum dividend for students. I know these are 2 great cards designed for STUDENTS (which I assume means no credit). I can't get any of them to approve me. Do I need to get one of those crappy cards first with extreme interest rates that almost anyone can get to improve my credit? Also if my parent gets another card from their account and gives that to me does that improve my credit?

A job helps, as the more you make the more likely they are to approve you.....or find one you can cosign with your parents, if that's an option. I applied for one through State Farm, as i already have my insurance with them, and was recently upgraded to their platinum rewards card after just two years.....just start somewhere, even if it's a "secured" card, i believe that helps build credit as well.

Hm... I had no problem getting a Citi Dividend for Students card. Though, I have a job, checking and savings account in my name, but no credit beyond that.

I had no problem getting: HSBC Direct Rewards Plus, CapitalOne Platinum, and a Discover Platinum, all non-student. Funny thing is that I initially applied for the student cards, and they rejected me from all of those - and then proceeded to offer me the full blown versions.

I had sort of the opposite. I initially applied for a full blown Citi Dividend card, but was initially rejected because my income is too low. With that, I applied then for their student version and was approved.

might want to make sure there's nothing wrong on your credit report. Most of the companies hand out those student cards like candy.

Yes, or get a department store card...just to start your credit history moving

You applied for an AMEX and a platinum credit card and you are suprised you got denied? Even if they are for students, these cards come with big lines of credit = not for newbies.

I'd go with Capital One. They have NO FEE cards with limits that start with 300 bucks and if you pay your bill they will increase the limit quickly (mine went from 300 to 30000 in less than a year, when I was 18)
Also, you can get a card and have a parent cosign on it with you. Just make sure you get a card with NO FEES! Its stupid to pay just to get credit, its not worth it. Also, dont carry a balance, too many people think this a good thing! Why would it be a good thing to carry a balance? "Look at me Banks! I cant pay my entire bill on time!" Stupid!

What? I had like 10 cards in college. They just gave them away. Sign up for a card, get a free t-shirt. I had half my wardrobe from credit card offers. The only card I ever got turned down for was the crappy GM card that I didn't want anyway, just wanted the free shirt. I had no job and only had one loan to speak of that got paid off several years earlier. I had like $25,000 in credit limits if you added them all up. No wonder kids get into trouble with credit cards. Just keep applying, you'll get one. If not get one from your local bank/Credit Union.

Definitely. The first card you get as a student will most likely NOT be a rewards card. After you get over that fact, then yeah you'll get accepted to anything else you apply to.
