Is there any news of a PS3 redesign (PS3 Slim, PSThree, etc)?

I know the PS3 is more reliable than the 360 but I prefer to wait until the revised versions of new consoles come out before I buy them. I got the slim Playstation remake (PSOne) remake and the slim PS2 instead of the fat versions. They just seem much more reliable (and eye catching) than the original releases.

I've heard of the revised PSP launching next month, but nothing about the PS3 yet..

Has there been any word of a slimmed down PS3...something using new architecture to run cooler and quieter than the original release?

Yes.. its already on the 65nm Archetecture from the 90nm, and they've announced that they made a 45nm Cell

There have also been several bundles

But no PS3 "slim"

The failure rate of PS3's I believe is 0.3%. I don't know the cite to that though

The PS3 just moved to a 65nm chipset with the new 40GB and 80GB PS3s. I wouldn't bet on a slimmed down version until they move to the 45nm chipset sometime later next year if then.

At first I thought that sounded a bit off, but upon further research the PS2 Slim (Nov 2004) came out in the States almost exactly four years after the OG PS2 (Oct 2000).

The PS3 came out in late 2006 and has been much less dominant in the marketplace compared to the PS3, so interpret that as you will. Perhaps that will lead to it coming out earlier or later than the comparable PS1/2 variants? ...the hell if I know.

At some point SSDs will be so cheap that they can have a slim model with a fixed or 1.8" removable 32 or 64 GB SSD, but that will probably be 2010.

the thing is, at the time of the ps2, a 45nm manufacturing process was still considered a big deal. Now that the technology has matured, I'd expect them to come out with one alot sooner... especially at when sony is still trying to gain marketshare, a redesign can have the same effect that the DS Lite had for the Nintendo DS.

Doubtful that a revision is coming out until around ~2010 like most other posters have said.

The PS2 Slim version was 4 or so years until it launched and Sony/MS have plans to drop the info. on their new consoles around 2010/2011 so that's when you can likely expect revisions to be coming in at rock bottom prices for both, perhaps.

Thanks for the replies yall. I'm a little disappointed. I was in a store the other day and the demo PS3 unit sounded like a jet engine.. Wayyy too loud for my quiet living room. I usually keep the TV down so not to annoy the neighbors in my apartment..and the sound of the fans would probably drown out half the game volume

Guess I'll wait another 18 months for the 45nm models...darn it.

You don't need to wait 18 months to buy a PS3, the new PS3s w/ 65nm core are very quiet. If you hear a loud and hot PS3, it's probably the old 90nm core units. There's no reason for stores to replace their display unit if it ain't broken. I had a 80GB PS3 that came w/ the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle, it was pretty loud and toasty after 5 min. Then I got a 80GB core, and it's nearly silent, and runs very cool even after running Folding@Home after a few hours. Your options are the 80GB core and 160GB uncharted: drake's fortune bundle.

I don't own a PS3 but the ones I've seen in some stores wasn't loud. However in Gamestop they keep systems inside something with cooling fans built in which are sometimes loud.

Likewise.

I have a 40GB PS3 and my friend lent me his launch 360 and the 360 is so damn loud in comparison but I turn up my volume so much, it doesn't bother me either way.

When is the 160gb going to be available?

Nov 30th. Amazon and other places like Amazon are taking pre-orders.

Nope. Same thing as the new 80GB which is actually the same as the 40GB.
