I have a lot of respect for GHB, even if he did go back on his tax break promise. A dedicated soldier straight out of HS, academic, and former DCI. Was cautious and prudent. Tragically for this country, however, a poor father in some respects.

Meh... He raised two governors (one who became president)... at some point his kids have to grow up and act on their own. And those actions can't reflect on him. (Dubbya)

Dubbya's debacle of a presidency is his own. I can't see how you'd blame H's parenting skills on this.

^ I remember reading in Doro Bush Koch's book My Father, My President that HW regretted not being more involved with his son in his younger years, especially during his early alcoholism. But I understand your point.

I don't know of any such figure off the top of my head, but Bush 41 is disliked strongly for good reason by the left. Nixon said of him, as he appointed him to some of the jobs that required the most willingness to put loyalty to party ahead of nation, that you could count on Bush to do just that. When they needed someone willing to be a PR guy as head of the republican party during Watergate, a real whore, who did they get?

Yup.

The last figure I know who really fit the description was Earl Warren - as governor. He actually was nominated for Governor of California by both the republicans and democrats. John Kennedy sort of fits later, but during his presidency he had quite a bit of opposition from republicans.

Actually, the figure I think was perhaps the most uniting figure in 40 years was Robert Kennedy.

I think what's preventing it is the right having become sort of rabid ideologues who will attack anyone not of their group. They'd eat Eisenhower alive, even though he had wide support from both parties as president.

Bob Dole is much more respected and liked by both sides than the real Bush is though George Herbert did warm the cockles of many an elderly ladies heart by having his mother, the old trout, act as first lady when he was president.

There are people not worth liking. Even if there were we're in such collective mindset that no one can rise above the scorn of the "other" side.

I am from Illinois and I will not vote for Obama. People from Illinois can not even stand their governor.

GHW Bush was a true weathervane. After justly ridiculing Reagan's program as "Voodoo Economics", he sold his political soul for the Vice Presidency, and turned into Reagan's loyal lapdog. GHWB never had a principle he wasn't willing to abandon at a moment's notice. He also had a truly remarkable political tone deafness. The only reason Bush 41 ever became President was Reagan's support against a rather weak Republican primary field, and the Democrat's unbelievable nomination of the even more inept campaigner Michael Dukakis.

While there are few current Senators or Representatives whose popularity crosses the aisle, I do remember a former Senator from Missouri who may fit the bill - John Danforth.

Just as we did in '04. Except the stakes are now higher.

Finally, how long do you think it will be before we have another President that both sides of the isle can look up to and support?

It may never happen again, so long as partisan politics is the status quo. There used to be a time where country came before party, but that is long gone.

Pfff...like you two should be talking. You want to know why it's so difficult for someone to take someone from the "other side" seriously, it's because of guys like you. And guys like me too, I don't claim to be innocent here. The problem isn't some nebulous "politics" or, "Washington"...the problem is with the average Joe who decided he needed to pick the biggest asshole on one side or another and behave exactly like them. Call it "The O'Reilly Factor"

Naturally Obama will be crucified, like Christ. People who hate themselves smell saints a mile away and hone in on them for blood and gore like vultures at a corpse. The greater the man the bigger the meal.

Uh, the neo-cons absolutely HATE Bush sr. The only thing keeping them from attacking him on a daily basis is their love of his idiot son. Not to mention the hatred of the Reagan Republicans who call him a traitor to their glorious leaders legacy.
And the tax cutters hate him with a passion.
No, Bush sr was one of the poorest choices you could possibly have made.
Much like the poor choice the US made when it elected his Fredo like son.

I never knew anyone back in the day who liked him, but ofc after he died the media made a saint out of what was a embarrassingly awful (the guy was literally catatonic and delusional and him and his admin were probably even more corrupt then bush jr.'s.

I still want to spit when I see a pic of him or M. Thatcher.

Foxnews type modern revisionist history ftl.

I have no political affiliations, and the only politician I both like and admire at this point is Jim Webb.

Obama and Webb for sure (for those who know of Webb)

On the Republican side, Giuliani seems to be looked at rather favorably -- whether deserved or not...and I suppose no one really dislikes McCain.

Straight-talkin 00 McCain, agreed. Pandering sellout "this is a christian nation" 08 McCain, not.

Sandra Day O'Connor

As to the OP contention about Bush41 and Clinton, I'd say that Bush is sort of a milquetoast, and doesn't draw strong feelings from anyone, so he may be popular merely because he doesn't elicit strong negative feelings. But he did only serve 4 years, so clearly not a universally popular guy at the end of his term. Clinton, scandals and all, went the distance. And while the people who like Bush41 may like him, the people who like Bubba really love him.
