Is there any reason to not get the H1N1 vaccine?

My mom has been watching the news and all the scare media going around and she's getting worried because young healthy people are dying from it (I'm a 27 y/o male).

My moms sister is a doctor and her whole family is getting the shot, and my mom us using that as part of her arsenal to insist that I get it.

To be honest, I don't want to get it.

I really haven't researched it too much, but I've been starting to look around to see if there's any reason I shouldn't just get it.

You would have to go out of your way to get the shot and that is just too inconvenient.
It's your body, it's your chioce.
When you say no, no means no.
Because you're wolverine so your immune system is indestructable.

Just a few reasons.

i went in to the docs last wednesday for something else and ended up getting the h1n1 vaccine since i was already there.

i've been getting flu shots yearly forever and haven't had the flu as long as i can remember.

EDIT:

on a side note, i did have a slight fever the following day, but I'm not sure if it was reactionary or if it was cause my wife was somewhat sick a couple days before and i picked it up from her. i had never had a reaction to seasonal flu vaccine.

There's really no good reason to not get a flu shot, other than your provider being out or extreme laziness. To insist on not getting a flu shot because "some people" might have had "adverse reactions" which were not necessarily caused by getting a flu shot is just ignorant and asinine. Don't be that person. The cases you hear about on the news of flu shots gone wrong are sensationalized stories which have only a marginal basis in fact; in most, if not all, of those cases, the flu shot had exactly nothing to do with the onset of any ailment. Pure coincidence. The media plays it up because fear sells. And you're buying into it. Don't believe the hype. Get your vaccination the way every doctor says you should; they know more than you about medicine.

Yep. This is why I never wear a seatbelt. I've never been in an accident, so it's pretty stupid to waste time putting one on, plus, sometimes they cause more damage than if you were not wearing one.

I think that's a pretty poor analogy. The human body has a built-in seatbelt called the immune system. Mine is working pretty well, so why would I want a 3rd party belt going in as well?

By the way, this has been discussed ad infinitum on NPR for the last 2 months and more. Just about everyone that has had their hands with the vaccine, from production to research, in Public Health and at the CDC, and also in regards to the virus, have been giving their input on a daily basis.

Basically, there really is very little excuse for people in this country to call themselves uninformed on this issue. The information is there if you sit down and listen.

I think you fail at analogy. Your body has a built in restraint system as well. It is perfectly designed to handle impact. A seatbelt only strengthens your natural ability to withstand an impact. Just like a flu shot merely strengthens your already well equipped immune system. It's a perfect analogy.

b/c you clearly don't understand how your immune system works.

Your body has had zero exposure to this virus strain (I'm assuming you were born after 1954--amiright?)

Therefore, your immune system = garbage in regards to H1N1. This isn't saying that H1N1 will be deadly if you get it. All it means is that if you do get it, you will likely be sick as hell for a week or so, possibly being hospitalized (or not), and who knows, maybe being on a ventilator. Most likely, you wouldn't die...but then again you might.

Or you could just get the vaccine and complain about the minor chance of a rash on your skin for 2 days.

BTW, my mother works at a hospital and mentioned that they had 3 new cases show up last week--one was a 33 year-old male who showed up in the ER late one night with difficulty breathing. within 24 hours he was on respirators and estimated at 80% mortality. Very healthy dude, otherwise. Crazy.

Again, these are somewhat rare, but the vaccine is free, and certainly not inconvenient.

Shhh! He's just trying to convince himself that he's smarter than the health care professionals, and that the media is more trustworthy when it comes to science and health reporting--I mean, we all know that they are always spot on when it comes to science reporting, right?

This reason right here. I have known several people that have gotten a flu shot then got the flu a few days later.

I have never gotten the flu shot and have yet to get the flu.

It really is a simple problem to analyze:

Postives:
1) It might save your life. Chances are it won't do anything directly for you, but it might do a lot of good.
2) It might prevent you from infecting others. Chances are you might not care signficantly about this, but the less it spreads the better for all of us. Even if you never feel the flu sympoms, you might still be a carrier. Thousands/millions will die from this flu eventually (as do people die from other forms of the flu). What if one of of those who die is someone dear to you? When you are old and/or immunocompromised where the flu will likely kill you, what would you wish that other people did in your situation? Karma can be nasty.

Negatives:
1) You might get the flu symptoms. This is a completely different thing from getting the flu. People (and especially the news) often confuse these two issues. Chances are you won't get any symptoms.
2) It might cost you money.
3) It might cost you time (unless you can do it during work).

For you, do the positives outweigh the negatives?

Because you'll get the swine flu, mercury poisoning, and have to walk backwards the rest of your life.
