Is there anything you can do to "refresh" a mattress?

I dont mean it smells or needs a cleaning. Im mean as far as bringing some spring and shape back to it. I bought it in 2005 and its a pillow top, so no flipping. I rotate it about 2-3 times per year.

I thought a mattress should last longer than 8 years, but it might just be time to replace it

8 years is a long time for a mattress, I kept one that long once but it cost me an absolute fortune because my wife has back issues.

After that time I now buy a mid price mattress that is on sale every 3-4 years and it ends up costing the same as buying a top end one and trying to make it last longer than it should.

I bought a memory foam mattress off overstock.com for $500 or something and I like it better than the spring pillow top I bought for $2000.

Next time I am in the market I plan to get a latex matrix from DreamFoam off Amazon.

My favorite bed was my cotton stuffed futon I used directly on the floor. I'd still be using it, but it it would look silly with my bedroom set, and my bed frame is too nice to just stick in a damp basement.

Have a look around online, start with amazon. I would suggest trying a memory foam one before you buy one if you haven't slept on one before (even if this involved finding a local hotel which uses them) they hold way too much body heat for me and I sweat like a paedo at a school play.

Latex FTW. Love mine.

Unless you've already decided on a new one, look into "mattress surgery", where you'll find the popular way is to cut 3/4 sides around your mattress' top, so that it's a flap you can open & remove all the worn foam, then replace with your own comfort layers of polyurethane and/or memory foam and/or latex etc. I've done it with a couple of mattresses myself, & actually prefer to completely extract the springs instead- ditch not only all the foam on top & bottom & around, but also the entire casing & everything but just the springs, & build from there. Springs must still have some life left, & was a decent mattress, relatively high spring count/heavy gauge etc.

Anyway a new mattress would be nice too. Just try to find out everything about not only the springs + every layer of foam you're paying thousands of dollars for- source & density of memory foams, whether hr/hd polyurethanes, dunlop or talalay latex & percent natural/synthetic, ild's etc. <--(edit)& ideally not one whose layers are all glued together so that you can't shuffle/replace them as they wear, without an electric knife anyway (which gets messY).

After tons of experimentation with all of the above & then some, I've found my back loves nothing better than springs + latex, with as little between myself & the latex as possible. Though no foam will last as long as it would if you protect it with mattress pads/casings etc. (why warranties insist on them). JUst feeeeeeeels better w/o.

Memory foam in the winter is some kinda good sleep, I tell you what.
In the summer, crank up the A/C! Still don't regret buying ours though, pillow top springers are just so bad comparatively.
I've decided to do what Puppies04 does, from here on out. New mattress every few years, nothing beats that fresh mattress feeling.

sorry but I have to say it..............find a new sleeping partner and I think you won't notice the mattress needing to be refreshed. Dang, hate when that happens.

In all seriousness, really consider a new one. Considering how much you sleep on it, and how critical good sleep is, scrimping on a good mattress is like trying to run a marathon after spending $15 on new "running shoes".

Woah, what. People buy new mattresses every few years? I've had the same one for... quite a while. It still feels like a dream in comparison to anything else I've slept on.

Never, ever, ever, ever buy a pillow top. They will sag 99% of the time because the cheap polyurethane foam will eventually break down.

The mattress industry are a bunch of crooks. I would do what a previous poster said, cut open the pillow top, remove all the cheap foam, and add in your own latex layers.

Most of the latex mattresses you see at the store are probably something like 2-3 inches of latex sandwiched somewhere between 5-6 inches of foam.

Just buy a new one. I've been thinking about getting one of those high-tech memory foam ones everyone raves about, but im a little scared.

I got one. Firm. Works great. Dont get one thats too squishy, they sink even more than a soft mattress.

Latex doesn't have near as much of the heat retention issues that you get with memory foam.
