the govt. would obviously want to colonize the place or atleast make it possible for some of us to live there. do you think they would share the news with the world and try to send people over there to live among the cavemen and help speed up the evolution process, or do you think it would be possible that they would decide to clear the planet of all the cavemen and never release that they were ever there, just that they found a planet with life on it(plants, animals etc)?

I believe (although could be wrong) that the American government has a policy that if extraterrestrial life is ever disovered then they must be left to their own devices - we are not allowed to interfere with them at all. I'm not actually sure where I read this so it could be bollocks.

If we ponder this question, don't you think other civilizations out there are doing the same?

What I find interesting is that everyone seems to think there must be something more intelligent than us out there. Suppose this was a common idea for all species at our level of intelligence and above, one of those species thinking this is bound to be wrong. Why do people feel the need to find something more intelligent than themselves?

Ok yes statistically we would probably not be the smartest, but one of the civilizations out there would be.

..I don't know. But look at the night sky with night vision binoc's. If you've never done this.. your in for a shock.

I've been meaning to get a telescope for sometime now.

Even at that note, just go out into the countryside (some place far from the city lights) and just look up and you'll see so much with just the naked eye.

I  star gazing.

But, my answer is definitely yes, and I believe they may be more developed, and some less developed, but the problem is, on another planet far off from here, maybe in another universe (If you believe in the tunnel theory) what defines life?

Interesting. I think the definition of life remains the same, i.e. a living thing that can function independently. Add intelligence to it and you have an intelligent life form as opposed to flora, coral reefs etc.

True but when we consider that they may not be carbon based (hell they might not even have the same atoms let alone electrons, this stuff is so hard to predict because anything we predict will be like what we know) what type of intelligence could they be capable of? Would intelligence exist, would they need to think?

Look at the moon. Now envision 1/10th of that width. That's how big an area that Hubble looked at when it took its Ultra Deep Field image. That image contains over 10,000 galaxies, each with billions of stars. Now extrapolate that around the entire sky. It's an utterly ridiculous number of galaxies, each with a ridiculous number of stars. I think it's very unlikely that the rest of the Universe is dead.

Xenu brought billions of people to Earth 75 million years ago, stacked them around volcanoes and blew them up with hydrogen bombs.

In the whole universe? Absolutely, the universe is larger than most people can comprehend, but to say it's in our solar system, very very very very unlikely. Now if there was life at one point in our solarsystem (not just on earth), that is a possibility.

You can rest assured that The Guv'mint will
A. Try to sell them something,
B. Try to find something to exploit for either commercial or military purposes.
C. Initiate a regime change if they don't want to buy anything.

I think you are getting star trek confused with real life.

Scale has nothing to do with probability.

Why is it unlikely. Believe it or not we aren't very advanced. If you were to look at the way scientist define civilization we are still on the bottom rung. The odds are in the favor of there being millions of planets w/ life. WHy would we be the only ones that are "intellegent"?

I don't think so because if there were, we'd know by now especially after all of these space travels and star landings. I'd say No.

We havent explored much of the galaxy. How would we have found them already? We havent even documents all of the species that live on this planet yet.

yes because it says the univ. is x years old when science says its x + 10billion.
