Question Is there much of a difference between a modern AHVA IPS panel vs an IPS panel?

Is there much of a difference between a modern AHVA IPS panel vs an IPS panel?

I know they have less a lower viewing angle before you get distorted colours. Is it enough of a problem that it would show up on a 32 inch monitor for 1 person sitting in the centre?

What about the other issue where I've heard AHVA panels have poorer colour reproduction. Is that still true?

I'm not an expert on the subject, but VA panel's viewing angles and colours are still not as good as IPS.

However, to me, the difference in contrast ratios far outstrips the issues with VA. I'd never be able to buy an IPS panel myself... (IMO).

Might want to check some reviews on TFTCentral. They go pretty deep

I have both VA and IPS panels in my setup and with proper calibration, they all display an equally good picture. I use the 32" 10bit VA 4k panel in the center and flank it with 27" 8bit IPS panels on the side. If anything, it comes down to the individual panels as a good VA is better than a poor IPS and vice versa.

AHVA stands for Advanced Hyper-Viewing Angle which is a proprietary panel tech from AU Optronics that functions similar to IPS. It's often confused with VA (Vertical Alignment) thanks to the poor naming choice. Samsung's PLS (Plane-to-Line Switching) is similar as well. AHVA is supposed to offer faster response times than most traditional IPS at the cost of some color accuracy. PLS is supposed to be brighter, have even wider viewing angles, and be cheaper to produce.

The differences are mostly on paper and should be small enough though that when comparing monitors you should treat AHVA and PLS as IPS and look at the actual performance. They have the same advantages, disadvantages, and general performance as IPS when compared to TN and VA.

Good point and I think he's conflating VA with this new AHVA (which is easy, I did the same thing myself; makes ya wonder why the company would call it something like that since it'll lead to people thinking its VA). Heck, Monoprice put "IPS like AHVA" on their new monitors.
