Is there too much violence in cartoons today?

Title says it all! To me thats what makes a cartoon. I mean how boring would they be if they had no violence. Just my thoughts tho.

I dunno I thought cartoons I watched growing up were pretty funny. Violence has managed to saturate everything now, and I question the legitimacy of showing a lot of cartoon violence to young kids.

society has become desencitized (sp?) to violence and as a result, everything is more violent. Take video games as an example. Doom caused widespread outrage when it first came out; but now it seems toned down compared to games like Kingpin, which isn't even too recent itself.

In the original b&w and later color Woody Woodpecker cartoons, Woody was a completely uncaring, violent asshole. This was back in the 50s right? The root of all evil is that damn TV set.

umm.. Tom and Jerry, Road runner... They were all waaay back.

I think the real question is: Is cartoon violence becoming too graphic nowadays?

Bugs Bunny was pretty violent too.

I agree that it is the realism today that is of greatest concern.

<<I think the real question is: Is cartoon violence becoming too graphic nowadays?>>

I think that just about sums it up...

Lets not forget Popeye too!

What about the 3 Stooges? They would hit each other on the head with hammers, poke each other in the eye and they weren't even a cartoon! At least in the beginning. Wouldn't a non-cartoon have a bigger affect on children concerning violence?

Violence in cartoons and tv has been around a loooooong time.

The problem, as I have seen it, seems to be more of a non-understanding between reality and fiction. People don't understand what life is. You can't even tell a kid that their goldfish died! Just get them another one.

No one wants to teach children that cartoons are just fiction. That in real life the coyote would be paste. So when someone gets upset they react violently because they don't understand what "consequences" are.

With the exception of WB's Batman I haven't watched cartoons in years. I'd guess today we need more inspirational toons like the old Superfriends, Smurfs and Voltron. Hey they can't hurt.

Ninja scroll is anime (good show). Japaneese animation. It is completely different than North American animation.

The difference is that the Japaneese society views animation as an art form. They create animation for children, youth, teens, adults, sexual amusement etc. Unlike North America where animation is viewed as "cartoons." Animation for years has only been sold as Disney and Saturday morning children shows.

It has only been in the last maybe 10 years that it has started to change. Why? North Americans began noticing Japanese animation and that started to be a competitive force in the North American market. Now they are doing major revamping and trying to bring in young adult to adult viewers (just look at Cow & Chicken, Duckman, etc) to watch more animation than anime.

Let a former animation student near a thread like this and see what you get.
