this is kind of OT but not many will know what i'm talking about there. so that 's why i'm here:

I am an avid overclocker and I went to the local 'puter store here and the guy was telling me about having licenses to sell thermal grease and that if you ingest it death will occur. is it really that bad for humans/ good for computer though.

Taken directly from Arctic Silver's website:

Don't eat it.

Don't squirt it in your eye, nose, ear, or any other accessible body orifice.

Don't give it to children or leave it laying around where kids can get a hold of it.

Don't smoke it.

Clean it off your skin with dish detergent (Dawn, Lux, Palmolive, Etc.).

Given the fact that most thermal greases/compounds contain silver, other metallic compounds, and thermo/electric conductive materials -- do you really want to eat some to find out?

ROFL - license to sell thermal grease? Now that's news to me.

I would advise against eating the stuff or any similar uses for thing other than what it is designed to do. But a license? Geez - bleach is more "dangerous" than thermal grease ... what do they use? Anthrax-base? .

Nah - that's BS - unless that's a really weird state/country that actually requires a license for selling the stuff. One can never be certain with those bureacrats .

That person sounds like the people we have working in computer stores here. Around here, they hire anyone that will work for min wage. It's pretty sad.

Well, thermal compound is not a hazardous product and you do not need a license. What an idiot...

I bet he didn't have any thermal paste and the only thing he could do was to sell you a new heat sink with a piece of tape on it.
Some older thermal pastes did have silicates in them, which if you inhaled several pounds could cause problems.
The other thing is, why does everybody think that all the people working in a Computer Store know anything about computers! Most of them are still using AOL>

You are right, some thermal compounds use fumed silica to give them thixotropy. But the silica is dispersed in the liquid phase and not airborne, so it is not hazardous. Breathing in fumed silica will lead to silicosys, a form of lung cancer. Did you know that most domestic cats die of silicosys because silica is used in cat litter? When the cat scratches the litter he creates silica dust that is then inhaled. The silica attaches to the inside of his lungs and starts to create scar tissue that later leads to tumors and death. Interesting...
