Is this a decent PSU?

I had one, loved it, was more power then what I needed for my A64 x800XT PE...HOWEVER. If you have a small case do NOT get it. The cables are extremely stiff which makes them hard to manage in smaller cases.

Well it sure is shiny!

I'd want to see the amp specs for each voltage rail. I suppose you could dig this up on the manufacturer's web site.

Meh they are more flash, than performance, MORE bark than bite, MORE tierd clichés than actual insight. You could get a comparable antec for the same price, that is more reliable, but less.. glossy.

I really like that idea because I have yet to figure out how to effectively wire my rig. Right now they just hang all over the place and it kills the airflow.

I have been inordinately pleased with Seasonic power supplies. You pay a little more, but they have good amp ratings, and are QUIET.

I don't think they have modular cables yet though.

Just curious, what do you people use to keep your wires out of the way? I've got an Antec 350W SmartBlue or whatever and I though about just using electricians tape, but figured that might fit under the "ghetto PC mod" thread.

. I love this quote, so I'll repeat it here: "There once were only two classes of PSU: quality and crap. Now there are three: quality, crap and crap that glows."

. You can get a kit from svc.com et al. to make any PSU modular. So pick a known good brand and mod it. If you aren't handy with tools, there are at least 5 other brands that have modular now. Almost any one of them would be better than any Ultra product.

That pretty much covers it.

Edit: If you really want something modular:

I'll post a few pictures of what I did in about an hour's time one Saturday. This is a fairly common practice, and I didn't even do a whole lot (didn't use any zip ties that weren't already on my PSU cables--all I used was electrical tape).

The motherboard side

I'd also take a Seasonic (PCP&C Silencers use them)/Fortron (Zippy uses them, and I think PCP&C TurboCools)/Topower (OCZ uses them)/XClio (uses Channel Well, which Antec uses)/etc. over the Ultra.

Yes it is good. The Ultra X-Connect 500W is the only PSU from them that I would recommend though.

Neither combination, though the Tsunami Dream is a nice case, from what I've heard. You can keep that, but I'd probably chuck the PSU based on what I've seen about the X-Connect. I'd suggest an OCZ ModStream or Antec NeoPower if it must be modular (remember, you can always just tuck all the wires in various places to clean up airflow); otherwise, a Seasonic Tornado or Silencer will do the job.

Hey Nek802,
. It isn't Powmax, I've been corrected on that (see JohnnyGuru's reviews). But it may as well be - definitely substandard as are the major characters in the marketing group behind the Ultra label (part of the TigerDirect/Infotel/Systemax cartel).
. In every halfway decent review I've seen of it, the X-C fails in one way or another. Each time a different failure mode. Speaks volumes as to its consistency of manufacture.
. You want a good PSU at a fair price, check the XClio line out http://www.xclio.com . Newegg carries some models.

Best deal around (when they have them)

Just remember that the ratings on the FSP server units are NOT Peak load, but sustainable load, while all lines are loaded to maximum. This means that you NEVER get less than the rated amperage on each line under any circumstances. Most other companies list peak per line without the other lines being loaded.

This unit linked to is also pre-burned in at 50 C., and guaranteed to put out that level of power at 50 C. ambient temps. I have yet to have found a PSU even close to that performance, at this price....You would have to go to Zippy level ($$$) to get a more sturdy unit.

Please at least take the time to identify the PS in actual text, besides just slapping up a link.

Also note that there have been a zillion threads on that unit. Do a search for x-connect and you'll find all the info you could want.
