Here at work, they are getting rid of these kits to employees. I'm not familiar with dual Xeon's.

Kit #1 $290 per kit

Qnty Item

1x SuperMicro motherboard (model P4DC6 or P4DC6+)

2x Intel Xeon Pentium 4 Processors (1.7GHz min)

4x RAMBUS 256MB [1GB total on the motherboard]

1x ATX Power Supply (400W min)

1x AGP graphics card (model ASUS V8420D or ASUS V7100)

1x Panasonic DVD-RAM SCSI drive (model LF-D201)

I just have to provide the case.

Thanks.

Please, you already know it's worth it. It's not nice to post it just to make these souls drool.

Oh yeah, pick me one up too.

Sorry. But seriously, I had no clue. Looks like they have more than 1 available (says we can buy as many as we want). What would this rig be good for? Sorry, if I sound like a newbie, but I am just familiar with the "normal" everyday rigs. I may have to jump on this. They also have a 6gb SCSI drive for $25.
Thanks again.

Even if you are not going to use it, the 2 Xeons and 1GB RDRAM has great resale value.

You are out of luck.
See here

Not true, it says "minimum of 1.7Ghz". That means he could possibly get a Northwood and resell them higher then a Willamette.

Would this be an upgrade from my current rig?

ASUS P4T533-C
P4 2.4 (533)
1 gig PC800 RDRAM
GeForce3 Ti200

I use my rig for gaming and a music recording/tracking studio.

Thanks again.

Wasn't even thinking of biting until I ran into you guys!

You should see if they will let you get one of the ASUS V8420D video cards, thats a geforce 4 ti 4200. the other (asus v7100) is a geforce 2 MX. But in any case it's still a good deal, as the gig of RDRAM alone is worth around $280. Probably wouldn't be better than your 2.4ghz for gaming, since there are very few games that can take advantage of duel proccessors.

It really depends on what you do. If you like games then you could consider staying where you are since lots of home programs don't support SMP. But if you have some more workstation type apps (Photoshop comes to mind) or are a crunching fiend then you might consider it. However as stated above those have good resale value.

Yes, definitely a good buy. That motherboard alone should be worth a good chunk of the $290.

Or if you just want to set up a server for a home network, which can also crunch SETI or Folding@Home on the side, it'd be more than adequate for that.

So here's the deal. I just got a reply to my questions, and 1. they don't know how extensively these have been used, 2. they don't know how old these are, and 3. they don't know if they are in good working condition and offer absolutely no money-back guarantee. They have about 200 of these "systems" lying around. Is it still worth the risk? I don't have $300 burning in my pocket. It's either this or upgrading my video card to a 9800pro.

I guess in that case I'd save for an upgrade that is "worth it". If you don't think you'd make use of the stuff, get something else. Sounds like you may use the video card, so getting the Xeon's etc would be nice, but maybe not so usefull. If I had an "extra" $300 I would try it, but not if it's one or the other. I don't need another computer bad enough to skip on upgrading my main rig. Unless my main rig were already fairly nice.

Just bought one of these today. The video card looks brand-spanking new, and the mobo doesn't look to shabby either...it comes with the full retail kit. The PSU is from PcPowerandCooling.com (Turbo-cool 450 ATX). They sold all 30 that were on site within an hour. They'll have more monday. Wish I had more money!

Geez, all the good deals are on the west coast.

30 of them sold online in an hour? I'd say that's a sign that it's a helluva good deal.
