I just got done assembling my computer

AMD FX-8350
ASUS R9280X-DC2T-3GD5
GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3
Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB (2 x 8GB)
Corsair Force Series GS CSSD-F128GBGS-BK 2.5" 128GB
Corsair HX series HX650 650W
Corsair Carbide Series 500R Arctic White Steel

Now I need to buy a monitor. This is one area where I’ve done the least work/research when putting together a machine and to this day I don’t understand why considering this is what we’re looking at. With that said I want to spend the money and time making sure I get the best viewing for the dollar and gaming performance.

I’m not a huge gamer but I do play a few and other then that I do a little web development and basic surfing. Primary game is Mechwarrior Online.

I use my 47" TV.

I would not like to have to play games on a tiny 27" display. It's almost like playing on a phone .

Yeah, but about using it for general computing? 1080p on a 42" screen isn't going to be particularly clear.

OP, personally I would go for a 24" 1920*1200 IPS monitor, or possibly one of the 2560*1440 Korean IPS models. You can even get them with wide gamut color and multiple inputs (DP, etc...), should you need or want those features.

Paying $500 for a low image quality TN screen would kill me. It's just because it's 3D, which is all but dead anyway.

Personally I would get (2) 23"-24" ips monitors. I actually did just that. =) Got them today and I'm loving them. Sure gaming will have to be done on a smaller screen. But you will absolutely love the extra pixels for everything else. This is someone coming from one of those 27" korean IPS 2560x1440 panels to two 22" tn panels temporarily to the two 23" ips panels I got today.

Thanks for the advise, I noticed that the options you suggested had higher resolutions but also higher refresh rates. Does that mean the refresh rates should be a secondary considertation when purchasing monitors?

I'll probably end up going with a res rate of 2560*1440 based on your recommendation, thanks.

It's a matter of individual taste. The IPS screens have much better color reproduction and don't suffer from color and brightness shifting when viewed off angle. A higher refresh rate can give you smoother gaming above 60fps. the 2560*1440 monitors can be "overclocked" to a higher refresh rate. There are people on these forums who could help you with the details of that.
