Is this a good hard drive ???

WD WESTERN DIGITAL "SPECIAL EDITION" 100GB 7200RPM EIDE HARD DRIVE MODEL # WD1000JB
For $130.00 on new egg. This still has 3yr warranty where the same model 80GB only has a 1yr warranty
Need new drive for storing digital video and such. If not this drive, which one ???

All Special Edition HDDs from Western Digital will carry the 3 year warranty even after October.

This is a good move on Western Digital's part if you ask me.

greenhorne, from what I remember, the 80gig and the 120gig special edition are slightly faster than the 100 due to the platter size that they use. They are all still fast though.

They're the exact same drive. JB = special edition (8MB cache).

Buffer To Disk Transfer 602 ms for the 80GB and 120GB and 525 ms for the 100GB. Wouldn't lower be better in this case??

Should I get that 80gb one now while the warrenty is still 3yrs, or should I wait for a better one to come down in price with 1yr warranty? The only reason I ask is because I won't be buying all the parts for my pc I'm building in about a months time...

It seems that the "Special edition" drives (with the 8MB onboard cache) will continue to carry the longer warranty. But, if you need the drive now, get it. If not, get a bigger, cheaper one later.

What is ATA?

I doubt the prices will go down much within a months time...

ATA == Advanced Technology Attachment

Usually when people talk about things like ATA/66, ATA/100, or ATA/133, they're talking about transfer speeds (the number trailing the ATA being the number of mbytes/sec that the IDE controller and hard drive can send between themselves). If you have an ATA/100 controller, but an ATA/66 disk, the controller will run that channel at ATA/66 to account for the disk; if your disk is ATA/100, but the controller is ATA/66, the disk will fall back into ATA/66 mode to work with the controller. Basically, it's something that you probably just don't need to worry about.

Edit: forgot one thing - the cable can also limit transfer speeds. All IDE cables use 40 pin connectors. However, IDE cables designed for ATA/66 and higher transfer rates have 80 conductors. This (afaik) helps to prevent cross talk between the wires. If your computer detects that you're using a 40 conductor cable, it will fall back to ATA/33 mode even if both drive and controller are capable of more.

Although what's the difference between that cable and a normal IDE cable? (they made out it was a deal and a half, though everywhere is like that..)

The 100GB is only slightly faster because it uses the same platters as the other two. Why would that make it faster? Because the 80GB version uses two 40GB platters, the 120GB uses three 40GB platters, and the 100GB uses three 40GB platters that have been limited to 33GB apiece. The outermost 33GB is used, so just like anything else that spins, you can get access to more information faster on the outermost ridges of the platter. It's the same reason why, if you partition your hard drive, you choose the outermost partition for the OS and/or your programs, but never for data because you don't need that lower seek time as much for mp3s as for programs.

It seems that you got a rounded cable. That means that it's round (duh!) instead of wide and flat (like normal IDE cables). Thus, it (your rounded cable) won't restrict the flow of air inside your computer's case as much as a normal, wide and flat IDE cable would.
