I'd read thoroughly Ten Steps to Buying a New Car.

This explains most of the games dealers play when they advertise low prices and how they get you to buy more than you really want to.

Then check out the section on True Market Value.

After reading this stuff, use the tools to estimate the cost of the car you want. Then you will have an idea of how much the "real" price of that $9995 car will be once the dealer gets you onto the car lot.

Good luck!

I priced a car on the web site with similiar features. Your ad price is just too f***ing good to be true. Is there a large rebate from the manufacturer?

If someone at the dealership couldn't show at least one vehicle at that price after the ad initially ran, then I would contact Albany. Let NY AG know what kind of games this business play!

"...I would contact Albany. Let NY AG know what kind of games this business play! ..."

Don't waste your time & money fighting the system...

Instead, learn the games that the dealers play, do your homework, and beat them at their own game.

Print out the advice from Edmunds and read it several times. Memorize the strategies, and create the target prices as they recommend. It pays off.

You are never going to get this car for that price. You are going to call them or go down there and the car will already have been sold. The car was probably sold before the paper was even printed. Sorry for the bad news but this is what dealerships do to get you in the door so they can talk you into something better...

No offense, but you're wasting your time because you will never get the car at that price.

Advertised prices you see in your local newspapers is simply a reflection of the each dealer's willingness to lie in order to get you to come down to the car lot and hear a sales pitch.

If you had read edmunds.com 10 times, you should have known this already because the regional pricing tool is the way to defeat this tactic. All of your local dealers buy from the same place, at the same price, and simply use different tactics to sell the cars.

To a certain extent - they all do.

That's why you gotta take it on yourself and learn the "real" pricing if each car you want to buy, instead of letting the dealer tempt you with prices that you will never get.

Yeah if you cause a large enough problem they will sell it to you. Bring a tape recorder which is always good to make the sales person honest. I have tried getting these deals before just for fun. Typically, watch the paper for a new deal, check in the morning right when you get your paper. If you see something you are interested in get to the dealer before they open and say you want the car they just advertised at x dollars. Typically they will say it was sold already or persuade you into higher priced cars or unnecessary options. If you hold your ground and there is no small print saying only one available at this price you should be able to get it but then the laws in NY are not necessarily the same as those in CA.

OH... Aside from bringing a tape recorder. Also DO NOT tell them that you are financing until you get a finalized deal. They will always ask whether you are financing or paying cash. Tell them you have cash and work the deal from there. Once you settle on a price then tell them that you have decided not to pay cash and to just finance it.

I bought a loss leader last week, took 4 days of arguing & a threat to call the TX AG office, but they finally came through. It was a 02 Golf TDI automatic for $15,999. They claimed it was a mis-print (then ran the same ad for the next 3 days, I had them by the short hairs & they knew it)...

As many have pointed out, this is a loss leader ad car, with probably a stipulation saying one only at this price. They will have one car at that price, or their ad will be illegal.

I bought one of these cars, but it wasn't easy. The first dealership I tried, said they already sold the car during the week (even though the ad came out Friday morning, and I was there before they opened on Friday morning). Since it was for that specific car, they wouldn't honor the price. That was at Long Beach Nissan.

The second time, they had the car at Wondries Nissan. The salesman really wanted me to finance the car, so he could make some more money. I told him I didn't want to. He told me he didn't have to sell me the car. I told him I'm sure there were many other salesmen around who would sell it to me - needless to say, he sold it to me.

Don't let them pressure you into doing something you don't want to do.

I had my car for almost a year, when some drunk guy smashed into it and totalled it while it was parked. It was nice when insurance gave me $1000 more than I paid for the car!

Winston.

Lotust:

No doubt that the dealer in question is a sleazeball. I suspect that all of the concerns voiced by others in this thread are well justified.

But I think the problem here is a really simple one. This is not a new car at all.

Once you finally get a hold of a sales rep, I think you'll find that this is either; at best, a "program car", an off-lease vehicle offered to Nissan dealers through Nissan Motor Credit, or more likely, an off-lease unit from a major leasing company, purchased for a song at a dealer-only auction.

Either way, you will probably find that it has 25,000 or more miles, paintwork and interior not in the condition you would expect of a 2002 model, and, generally speaking, has been "rode hard and put away wet".

Disreputable dealers make a small fortune from such a car. They will buy one at auction and not spend a nickel refurbishing or even cleaning it. Then they advertise it for what seems like a bargain price. When a pidgeon shows up to see it, they say, "Gee, I just don't know about this one, it doesn't seem a whole lot nicer than the car I've got." The salesman then steers them toward a sparkling new Sentra, with the full dealer "pack" (fabric protection, paint protection, rustproofing, pin striping, body side mouldings, extended warranty, etc) for $16,000, and the rest is history.

After it has helped them sell many new Sentras, but long before it has a "birthday" (spends one year on the dealer's lot) they will clean and shine it, spray the engine compartment with a coat of clear lacquer, mark it prominently "One Owner" (remember, even ex-NYC cabs with 300,000 miles on them are sold as "One Owner" because legally, most are) and sell it for somewhere above NADA retail.

I urge you not to buy so much as a pair of mudflaps from this dealer, or a dealer who runs those obnoxious shouting radio commercials, or the commercials where they deliberately mumble quietly at the end to prevent you from hearing what they must tell you legally. Vote with your dollar and tell these crooks to go to hell, and maybe this sort of thievery will stop.

Good luck!

In California these ads typically in fine print have VIN numbers for one to three cars and the notation that the price is for those vehicles only.

I've never investigated but I'd bet you'd never find those cars on the lot when you arrived before the doors open the morning the ad runs.

Chances are its the base bare bones model. My sister test drove one of these this summer. She chose a loaded three year old Altima instead. It didn't have power locks, windows, or anything that is pretty much standard anymore.

For those in the Silicon Valley. I had a friend who purchased a 2001 Honda Accord VP w/ Power Locks, Keyless Entry, Supsension upgrade to LX trim, Wood trims, floor mats, anti-stain treatment for $16,500 (includes taxes and DMV fee) in Sept or October 01.

When I went to Captol Honda and as for the Std VP package and they offer $16,488 + tx +dmv fee just for the base model . I told the Sales Rep he had to better than that, next thing i know his supervisior came out and tried to pursade me why his price is "fair" and showed me a invoice which is accurate but i told him that i can get a better deal elsewhere. Needless to say I walked out.

The following day i get a call from Mike ( i think it the supervisior's boss) and wanted me to call him, I never did

There was also a JackAxx at Steven Creek Honda, I the same strategy and the sale rep who was dressed w/ white t-shirt and was fat told straight to my face that i was lie-ing about the price when i offered him prove of that price (paper work from the other honda dealer my friend brought it at)

PS This is for 2001 Honda Accord Couple $21500 out the door (includes tx and dmv) and had "extra dealer optiion add on for free

Note: Never Accept there first two offers for a price you know you can get elsewhere.

Is it possible to get a hot deal on a car? YES.
Is it easy? NO!

From what I've seen, pretty much everything everyone here has said is correct -- the deals advertised by the dealerships in the paper are mostly scams (some legal, some not) just to get you into the dealership. It is, however, possible to get a good price on a car independent of these advertisements.

I bought a new Sentra SE (this is with the 2.0L engine) with the performance package (which includes most of the extras... CD player, bigger wheels, power everything, spoiler, alarm system, etc.) in May for $14,092 before T/T/T (it was still under $15000 after all of that). This is despite a MSRP of $16,656 and a "dealer invoice" of $14,999. That's right, I bought my car for more than $800 less than what the dealer claims to have bought it for from the manufacturer.

How do you do this? My recommendation is that you bring someone with you who knows what he or she is doing. In my case, it was my father. Also, you have to always keep in mind that the dealer does not care about you or your feelings, even though they may pretend -- the only thing that's important to them is the bottom line, and it should be the only thing important to you as well.

Oh, and it is possible to get deals from dealers (no pun intended) by threatening them, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you have some experience. A few years ago, my father was looking on the Acura website and was running their "lease calculator" just out of curiosity... long story short, there must have been some bug in it, because it told him he could have a 3-year lease for around $245/month (don't remember how much down). He took it to the dealer and threatened to call the state attorney general if they didn't honor the deal, so they did, and we've been driving around an Acura for the past few years that's probably cheaper than an Accord would have been! (Pretty sure the dealer isn't making any money on this lease, though.)

Good luck!
