Here's the big question: why did she consent to it? When they said, "hey, we're going to knock you out for a bit and start cutting into your finger!" I would have told them to stuff it and found another doctor. Of course, this all depends on the situation. If the splinter was really big and really deep, or if she wanted too long and the finger was really infected, it may have been necessary.
I find that more people need to use their common sense when seeking medical advice. We all hope that doctors and health care staff are good people, but they are just people after all. They can make mistakes, get greedy, etc. If you get medical advice that just doesn't sit right with you, by all means get a second opinion. It's your body and your life - keep it that way.
