Is this a viable workaround for turning 6 pin PCIe into 8 pin?

I have a "CoolerMaster Elite 460W", which has only one 6 pin pcie connector, and no 8 pin. but the 6 pin has 3 power wires (yellow ones), which is basically like an 8 pin connector without the two extra ground wires. Attaching this 6 pin connector to "MSI 1060 Gaming X" enables the card to output a black page with one line in it that says "...attach pcie connector..." (and when the connector is not attached, it wont output anything), so i'm thinking that the card checks for all the pieces, and wont work without the two extra.

So it got me thinking about doing this:
i have a molex to 6 pin adapter, i cut two of the 6 pins, and connect their wires to two black wires in a molex connector coming out of the psu (two middle ones). and then attach that to the two empty gpu sockets.
will it work? and is it safe to try? thanks.

Not worth the risk.

Although after altering the connector might fit in the two empty spots, each one of those connectors do a specific task.

For example, the wire gauge for your 6-pin PCIe connector might not be able to handle extra power draw (6-pin 75w, 8-pin 150w). The two extra wires are ground wires that allow the connector to pull the full 150w.

Anyways, there are 6-pin to 8-pin adapters available to buy, so you don't need to splice anything if you want to go that route. Then you would only have to worry about the wire gauge being thick enough to handle the extra power draw.

Although if were me, I'd buy a PSU that already had the correct PCIe cable so I didn't have to worry about damage/it not working. You would have to have all the pins exactly right, or your video card (and possibly other components) could face instant death.

I have seen several previous posts about that same PSU with new video cards. It's amazing they designed it the way they did.

Edit:

Here's some additional reading about the 6-pin to 8-pin adapters available to purchase:

Another option is a molex to 8-pin adapter:

I tried buying a 6 pin to 8 pin, and molex to 8 pin, but couldn't find any in a 20 miles radius! and buying a new psu is out of the question for me right now.
techPowerUp calculated that this gpu has at "Peak Gaming" a tdp of 130W. so im not really worried about extra power draw.
besides, i'm really curious to know if this works!

I'm not sure if there are any hardcore PSU guys that hang around in this forum anymore, but maybe one will come along and would know the answer.

However, the power supply sub-forum usually doesn't get much traffic as compared to the others. You might have better luck on a forum like JonnyGuru.

I'm currently running an RX 480 with an 8pin connector off a Corsair Vx450, which only has a 6 pin connector. The card came with a 6 pin to 8 pin connector, which works perfectly.

I would not do any cutting or soldering of wires. Even if you have to order a 6 pin to 8 pin connector online, just do so.

You don't even need to do that. The last two pins are a ground and a sense. You just need to connect the two together so it knows your cable is capable of providing 150W, and the card will run fine with a 6 pin connector. I personally prefer this to a 6 to 8 pin adapter, as you're not adding any additional current carrying ability in that case and it just introduces another connection in the chain.

i did it and it worked! i didn't cut the 6 pin connector, but instead ran a wire from molex' ground wire, to the two connectors. i tested it for the past 24 hours, and had no problem.

The funny part about the 6-pin/8-pin messup is the 8-pin shouldn't even need to exist if the 6-pin wasn't so grossly underrated at 75W to begin with.

BTW I also have no idea on why does my GTX 1070 needs 2x8-pin (300W+75W) for 150W TDP only card. It's ridiculous.
