Absolutely bad. Get it replaced either under warranty (if it has one) or out of pocket. Can't use it that way.

If Lithium Ion is close enough to Lithium Polymer, pierce the coating of the cell and soak it in salt water for a day or two. Then it will be safe to toss in the garbage.

Li-pos are pretty god damned dangerous enough without any sort of damage. Piercing one is asking for trouble.


OP, if you have a hobby store (NOT hobby lobby, but something like a Tower Hobbies) they usually have a box for battery disposal. Our local BestBuy has this as well. You may want to check.
If you are worried about it bursting into flames, there are fire retardent bags for batteries (in case something should happen during a charge cycle) that you can place it in.

I fly RC planes and a lot of the guys I fly with are scared shitless of these batteries. I've never had a problem with them myself, knock on wood. They're only really dangerous if they're abused or charged improperly, for the most part. This pack is probably bad to begin with though. This may be from that crop of defective Sony batteries. Apple did have a recall in 2006 for them so if the laptop is that old, you may get it replaced for nothing. That's why I said to take it to an Apple authorized repair centre.

For now, keep it in a fireproof container. It shouldn't explode at this point at long as it's not being charged or used. Consult your municipality's trash services for proper disposal guidelines.

Do your research. Shorting the main leads is indeed extremely dangerous. But simply piercing the outer foil is not. This has been the recommended way to dispose of lipos for years.

It's a moot point anyway. The battery in question is out of a laptop. Li-Ion can't put out near the current that Lipos can.

Most lipos will just lose capacity and become useless instead of going inferno on you. Still, if they do start a fire it goes nice and fast and you don't want to be near it. Lots of videos on the net of burning lipos.
