is this dog underfed or a-okay

Underfed/In need of help.... or is it okay.

Looks OK to me. That's a really nice looking dog.
Malnourished would look much worse. You should be able to see some rib in your dog.

He is underfed. I have next door neighbors who own and breed Great Danes, they don't have ribs or spine showing and have more muscle.

Underfed, seeing a few ribs is good, seeing bumps in the spine is not. Of course, they may have done that to slow his growth rate to save his joints....once he finishes growing, feed him some more to fill him out a bit...he probably only needs to gain 15-20 pounds.

Might be normal for abnormally large dogs; abnormally tall humans often have some noticeable structural differences as well.

Also when I first read the title I was like "wtf is un-derfed".

It's a little skinny, but Danes in general should be a little skinnier than your average dog. They're so big that any additional weight will cause joint issues. My neighbors have 2 Great Danes. The male isn't quite that skinny, but he's pretty close. They leave food out all day, so he's getting as much as he wants.

That looks normal for that breed, possible a LITTLE skinny, but not unhealthy....like josh said, Danes are generally pretty skinny.

Underfed. I used to have a Dane. Like someone else said, a couple ribs are fine, but you shouldn't see his spine.

Question is, though, are the owners free-feeding him or measuring. My Dane was free-fed, but didn't overeat. If this one free-feeds and looks like that, then he should be fine.

Underfed. I was always told you should be able to easily feel individual ribs, but not see them clearly.

The dog is fine. When they get that large, extra weight can really cause a lot of problems for them. Especially so with a breed known to have joint problems.

Under fed, his rear leg muscles should be bigger and there is no way it's normal to see the backbone that defined.
