Just out of interest, what do you think that a person suffering from stress should look like when on holiday?
How about the part where they say they fired him for 'a "breakdown" of confidence'?What part of the story leads you to think he misled them or lied to them?

IMO, thats a polite way of saying they no longer trust him.
how the hell can you take sick leave for stress from a job anyway. if you can't work a job without getting stressed out over it, maybe you should find a less stressful job, not claim sick at that job. they should fire him for not being able to do his job without being sick.
Weird that he would go to the doctor, "take some time off" and suddenly, tickets to Australia are arranged, etc.
I'd think that a trip like that would require some time in advance to book.
I haven't looked into it that much and I didn't see it mentioned when skimming the article so I could be completely wrong but I'm assuming this sick leave that the employee is taking is sick leave he's earned? And not just free money/leave. If that is the case, who gives a flying fuck what he uses his earned leave on. If it is not the case, then yeah it's a bit fishy.
As for getting stressed out while working, it's completely understandable. I've been in my current position for 13 years now (with only 2 short 1 week vacations in all this time) and some days it's just hard for me to drag my ass out of bed. I could try to find something different but I like the stability my position offers. Plus with a family of 5, I'm a bit weary of changing jobs right now given the current state of our economy. So I keep plugging away for the good of my family.
never understood people like this, especially if you get paid time off.
With kids and school related stuff, my leaves gets whittled away
yeah but that's an excuse (even if it is a reality). there is always a way to find time, especially in 13 years. i could never do it heh.
Separating sick leave and vacation days is pretty stupid. Just combine them without reducing the total.
You probably have no kids, you have no idea.
Vacation with kids are harder than just staying at home and not going anywhere.....they are also VERY expensive (especially when you have 3-4 kids and one income).
I know EXACTLY what he means and what he is talking about.
You will never be able to relate, until you are in his shoes.
i know 100% that when we do have a kid (max 2 kids) that we are going to continue to take vacations. even if it's driving to the beach 3 hours away, we're going to do it. my brother and sister have done it with a kid already and my wife and i are much more well off than they are, so i'm not concerned about being able to afford it.
i may not be taking 2-3 trips a year out of the country like i do now, but it is definitely going to be a priority. we also want to get our kids started with traveling early so that they aren't 20+ years old the first time they get out of the country like i was.

No it isn't, because sick leave and annual leave are entirely different things.

Looks like a few people in this thread are the ones who take "mental days" from work. If stress causes you to not be able to come in to work, then you are not fit for the job. This guy and his wife take it a few dozen steps further and take over a month off for their "mental day".
from the company perspective, keeping them separate just encourages people to lie to misuse sick time. if its all one big pool, this becomes a non-issue.I can't for the life of me imagine why anyone would want combined annual leave and sick leave.
Annual leave is so I can have a break from work, recuperate, refresh, lounge around, etc at my leisure.
Sick leave is for when I'm sick. Being sick is usually pretty shit, regardless of the fact that I'm not at work.
