Just out of interest, what do you think that a person suffering from stress should look like when on holiday?

He probably expects him to look like this:

or this:

Bottom line, completely unjustified. He got permission to take SL from the company. Doctor told him to go on vacation to deal with the stress. Looks like the guy and his wife followed the rules completely.

How about the part where they say they fired him for 'a "breakdown" of confidence'?

IMO, thats a polite way of saying they no longer trust him.

That proves nothing, and is the same knee jerk nonsense that people on this thread are spouting.

how the hell can you take sick leave for stress from a job anyway. if you can't work a job without getting stressed out over it, maybe you should find a less stressful job, not claim sick at that job. they should fire him for not being able to do his job without being sick.

I haven't looked into it that much and I didn't see it mentioned when skimming the article so I could be completely wrong but I'm assuming this sick leave that the employee is taking is sick leave he's earned? And not just free money/leave. If that is the case, who gives a flying fuck what he uses his earned leave on. If it is not the case, then yeah it's a bit fishy.

As for getting stressed out while working, it's completely understandable. I've been in my current position for 13 years now (with only 2 short 1 week vacations in all this time) and some days it's just hard for me to drag my ass out of bed. I could try to find something different but I like the stability my position offers. Plus with a family of 5, I'm a bit weary of changing jobs right now given the current state of our economy. So I keep plugging away for the good of my family.

Weird that he would go to the doctor, "take some time off" and suddenly, tickets to Australia are arranged, etc.

I'd think that a trip like that would require some time in advance to book.

Why? He has friends to stay with there, takes about 5 minutes to book the flight, what's so hard about that, have family/friends back home look after the house while they are gone.

62 y/o...takes 'sick leave' for job-related stress.

Just fucking retire or get another job. Why do so many people assume that everyone else should cater to them? If you can't handle it, leave.

Looks like a few people in this thread are the ones who take "mental days" from work. If stress causes you to not be able to come in to work, then you are not fit for the job. This guy and his wife take it a few dozen steps further and take over a month off for their "mental day".

Then why does the company offer sick leave ? They should have rules and require a doctor's note. If your in the hospital that makes sense, or you have cancer or something again that makes sense for sick leave.

They can't just say you may take sick leave and leave it at that they probably have certain rules for it.

Separating sick leave and vacation days is pretty stupid. Just combine them without reducing the total.

yeah but that's an excuse (even if it is a reality). there is always a way to find time, especially in 13 years. i could never do it heh.

You probably have no kids, you have no idea.

Vacation with kids are harder than just staying at home and not going anywhere.....they are also VERY expensive (especially when you have 3-4 kids and one income).

I know EXACTLY what he means and what he is talking about.

You will never be able to relate, until you are in his shoes.

that is how every "real" job i've ever had has been. it's just had different names -pto or plt.

i know 100% that when we do have a kid (max 2 kids) that we are going to continue to take vacations. even if it's driving to the beach 3 hours away, we're going to do it. my brother and sister have done it with a kid already and my wife and i are much more well off than they are, so i'm not concerned about being able to afford it.

i may not be taking 2-3 trips a year out of the country like i do now, but it is definitely going to be a priority. we also want to get our kids started with traveling early so that they aren't 20+ years old the first time they get out of the country like i was.

You're not getting it. Driving to the beach 3 hours away with 2 kids is not always a vacation. Maybe in your mind, you're envisioning a time when your kids are a lot bigger, I dunno. But it's not easy and until you do have kids, you have no idea.

BTW my parents used to take me and my sis everywhere. We're talking tons of road trips, going to India every 3 years, the works. God bless them for putting up with us two little shits

Good god yeah. Just feeding the rug rats when you're out and about can get so pricey these days. Kid's meals seem to cost more than I used to pay for adult meals 10 years back lol

No it isn't, because sick leave and annual leave are entirely different things.

My job has separate leave as well. I'm curious as to why it's not stupid to keep them separate. The only argument I can think of is both types of leave are coming from two different accounts.

So if someone injures themselves at work - and I'm not talking about standing up on a swivel chair to screw in a lightbulb - , are they also not fit for the job?

I can't for the life of me imagine why anyone would want combined annual leave and sick leave.

Annual leave is so I can have a break from work, recuperate, refresh, lounge around, etc at my leisure.

Sick leave is for when I'm sick. Being sick is usually pretty shit, regardless of the fact that I'm not at work.

from the company perspective, keeping them separate just encourages people to lie to misuse sick time. if its all one big pool, this becomes a non-issue.

my last two positions have had just one pool of PTO. keeps it very simple... if you are at work you get paid, if you are not, you dont. no doctors notes, no stretching the truth and simpler accounting too.
