What's with all the rugs on the walls?
Allow me to explain.
You see, over there they don't use the type of foam/fiber isolation prevalent in North American constructions... The walls are mostly concrete or brick, with a thin layer of plaster over it (and they didn't use to have acrylic paints for walls, either).
As such, the walls are very cold. The "rugs" you see are actually made for hanging on walls, not for the floor. They're used for decoration and isolation. Yes, it does look kitsch and it's bizarre to the Western mind; most educated East-Europeans won't display such things on their walls, either... but there's still a large layer of population that represents the equivalent of "rednecks"...
