Does it matter? If he pulls a knife and threatens me, isn't that enough justification to settle the matter? Honestly, I don't want to give him a second chance to do it to someone else, possibly hurting them.

it does matter what state even if he does have a permit.
some states say you have to try to retreat before you can use deadly force.

If you shoot to wound, it's bad for you because then they can sue you if they live. Also just empty several rounds into the person, because it will look more like you feared for your life that way.

It's also important to piss or shit yourself to ensure the "feared for your life" look.

Yeah right. Have you jogged around Morningside Park at night/dawn? Have you jogged around the Polo Grounds at night?

You're jogging and not carrying any money, why would they want to rob you? Afraid that they're going to rape you?

Well, these assholes become upset and will go about harming you every way possible. I've lived around Morningside Park for the past 5 years and we get the emails about yet another brutal assault/rape/robbery/death like clockwork.

I live in New York state. I plan on getting one because I want to do some night jogging but I think you can only use the gun at the range.

I hope you get denied. You are already fantasizing about killing someone. Hopefully someone forwards this post to the proper person.

As a civilian with a permit, you are NOT justified to become a vigilante looking for trouble. Carrying a firearm while running? What are you gonna do, get a thigh holster? That just looks like you are looking for trouble while running. Carry it while walking and doing your duties, not running through the worst neighborhoods hoping someone will give you the chance to be 'the hero'.

Not to mention, being picked up by the police after killing a guy while you were going for a jog with your pistol, isn't going to look like you were 'protecting yourself'.
The idea of having a CCP is to conceal the weapon, not make yourself a target.

So there are people you already have in mind I see. So who are "these assholes"??

But yes get a gun, we need more funny Darwin stories.

wow...just wow...

i wouldn't call this fantasizing. I would call it due diligence. Trying to know the law and what you are allowed to do within it sounds like a pretty damn good idea to me.

OP - don't listen to their shit. It's your right to own a gun and your right to carry it whenever you want in accordance with the proper laws. It is also perfectly legal to cap some piece of shit after they make a threatening advance towards you (this includes pulling a knife or gun). As soon as fear for your life is felt, fire at will, and shoot to kill.

Sometimes you don't have a choice where you live. My schools have always been near the worst neighborhoods imaginable.

We're not allowed to carry concealed up here and I would never want to. I still can't imagine running with one though, it's hard enough running with my Blackberry.

If you shoot, shoot to kill.
If you shoot to wound, then you'll have to spend money for a lawyer. They will sue and try to bring charges up against you.

Shoot minimum 3 shots, aim either at the head (hard to do) or their chest.

If you shoot to kill in self-defense, then you don't have to worry about them coming back for revenge, trying to sue you, or try to bring charges against you..

Pretty good advice, but I'd say always start low. Aiming for low center mass definitely looks more like self defense, rather than straight up vigilante execution... and when firing off multiple rounds when starting low, it's likely by the third shot you'll be naturally at head level anyhow, which is even more of a natural self preservation action anyhow... firing multiple rounds to make sure the guy is down and no longer a threat to you.

But the OP... I don't even know if I'd recommend him getting a CCP anymore. He sounds like it WANTS to be the target just to he can have a chance to kill. Can almost guarantee he'd get himself killed or lock up, or hesitate too much reaching for the firearm.
Good thing most states have classes to take before you can get a CCP.

Hopefully this douche gets denied:

Right-To-Carry Law Type: Restrictive May Issue. In order for an upstate licensee to lawfully carry a handgun in New York City, he/she must first make application with the New York City Police Department to have their permit "validated." An investigation will be conducted to determine the authenticity of the license, after which a "needs assessment" will be conducted to determine whether the applicant has sufficiently demonstrated a "need" to possess a handgun under the circumstances provided.

The simple desire to possess a handgun while in New York City, without some other extenuating circumstances, will not serve to present a "need" suitable to receive authorization. In cases where "need" is sufficiently demonstrated, permission will be given, usually for a specific period of time, after which the process would start over again.

Every handgun must be entered into the CoBIS according to 18.2(9NYCRR Section 493.2). This mandates that a ballistic sample is taken and placed in the ballistic data bank of every gun allowed in the state after March 1, 2001.

And if he isn't, hopefully he shoots himself while jogging.

- Don't aim for the head. You're less likely to hit, and if you do, it looks like you're shooting to kill.

- Don't shoot to kill. They'll try to get you for murder.

- Don't shoot to wound. The criminal will try to sue you.

- Shoot to STOP. Your only concern is to make the bad guy stop doing what he's doing (in this case, trying to kill you). If he dies, fine. If he lives, fine. Put two or three rounds in his chest (or however many it takes to drop him) and it should be clear that you were defending yourself. Ultimately, the legal ramifications are unimportant if you genuinely saved your own life by fighting back.

How about the constant deaths/rapes/assaults of the student body by local thugs? I could send you at least a hundred emails I've gotten over the years.

always shoot to kill. wound/kill are the two options. unless you are firing a stray bullet into the air.
