is this legal, getting stuck in a outdoor self-storage facility due to it being after hours.

i had a long rant typed out but decided to type out a cliff note version.

had to go to our storage locker last night, got there about 8:50pm. found the important thing my wife needed for a job offer and tried to leave. i punch in my code to drive out and the LCD display says "NO LATE EXIT ALLOWED" WTF??? its 9:15.

I try the intercom several time and no reply. the house the owners live in is dark. I try calling the number on my bill (i have saved in drive) and i get voicemail. so my wife and i are looking at each other. wondering what in the fuck we do now. So i lay into the intercom a few more times. and then try the number again. by now its 9:30. the owner answers the phone and i tell him we are stuck inside and to please let us out.

he gets snotty and says. "thanks for waking sleeping people, you are past the gate hours and i will be charging your account $40.00 to let you out.

me

how can this be a legal practice? what if the owners were not home to let us out?? and to charge me to let me out? fuck that, to me that is extortion and false imprisonment.

It's not legal. I bet if you escalated it, you could successfully sue for false imprisonment.

my old storage facility was very specific about what would happen if you were there past closing time...

Oh get out of here with that crap.

You mean those things that no one reads that always cover's the business' ass for things like this?

But seriously, what the fuck do you guys need storage for? Sound like true american hoarders that buy too much shit and don't throw away enough useless shit - which is exactly like all the people in my low-middle class neighborhood. It took me the longest time to figure out why everyone parks in their drive-way and on the street. Is it from multiple cars? Nope. Catch them with their garage open and it's filled to the brim with complete and total crap.

I'm not condoning the system the owners have implemented, but I am curious if they have it documented as their practice.

Also, find a more reputable storage facility, OP. This one sounds shady AF.

If they have documented their practice, all the better to sue them

It is blatantly illegal to lock people in somewhere against their will no matter what

Law trumps policy every time

If nothing else, the fire marshal would love to have a word with them

My wife's family owned an antique/2nd hand store for 30+ years. The family got 1st dibs. At one time, we were trying to sell our house and had to de clutter hence the storage. Once the house was "normal" and we didn't sell, I used the stance of dominance that I learned here and the house has been normal-ish ever since.
Now the in laws are moving to a smaller place and the m.i.l. has already told me what pieces we're getting. I told her no and walked off.

Most likely.

My garage isn't filled to the brim with useless crap, but it does house my 20 ton press, stick and mig welders, lawn mower, weed eater, kayaks, lawn spreader, drill press, shop vac, ladders, bicycles (5 of them for the family), etc. Garages aren't used for parking, they are a place a man puts his tools to use.

I'm pretty sure they could walk out of there just fine, they would just have to come pick their car up at a later time. It's not like they were locked in a prison cell lol.

i take you have not have had to deal with having parents passed away and you are stuck with all their stuff? or kids move out and no place to store their stuff? or have you ever moved and lived in temporary housing while your current house is being built?

honestly can you just be a nice person and not a labeling raging asshole on here?

All the storage units I've seen just have one of those bars that flips up when you exit. I've seen garages that lock between certain hours too and if you don't get your car out of there, then you fucked. But obviously you can walk out of there ... since you walked in there.

I don't know how big the grounds are but the owners should be taking a lap around to ensure nobody is still there. At worst, they could catch some people planning to thievery throughout the night.

Really? because last I checked a vehicle is more valuable than any of those

Also, I have most of that shit too, it's called walls. You can put hooks on them and store 90% of what you mentioned.

Valid point, I say that as someone with a MIL that simply throws away absolutely nothing. My main problem when she passes away is I'm going to be like "Let's throw all this shit away, now. It's worth nothing, and it has no sentimental value", whereas the wife and siblings are probably going to want to go through it all. It's crap, and all of it is crap. Every single bit of it outside of photos. She has been given gifts over years and for some reason she refuses to use the gifts and keeps them in their original pristine packages. I'm talking simple things like drinking glasses. In the end though it's crap. It's crap because no one wants to use it and no one would buy it. Donate it all to goodwill and call it a day.

But I would call that a temporary storage because I refuse to have monthly payments of "We will get around to it someday" type of bullshit.

Also what about my statement made me sound like a "labeling raging asshole"? Sounds like my statement of simply being a hoarder really struck a nerve there ol' chap

Because.

I don't know, I'm a pessimist in life, my glass is always half-empty. I'm partially thankful for that because I see problems before they come. I also hold people to a higher standard in general in life - and when people fall below simple standards in life (such as being an asshole when driving, for example) I would hold no shame if they were to fall over and die right there. They are no use to this world other than ensuring its destruction.

Hmm, if after the first time you didn't get a answer, then you call the cops.
Let them 'break' you out.

I normally suspend the kayaks and bikes from the ceiling, but since we use them often in the summer, I leave them on the floor as it is dumb to keep putting them up just to take them down a week later.
I do hang many things from the walls such as the spreader, weed eater, electrical cords. It's only a 3 car garage and space is limited.

I have the tools in my truck to get me out of anything that isn't specifically a prison or blast shelter. I'd have gotten myself out, and when the owner was writing a check to the contractor to fix his shit, he could reflect on his access policy.
