Hey guys, here are the specs of my new comp (budget is a factor):

P4 2.8E Prescott 800FSB 1MB
P4P800-SE Mobo
1024MB DDR-PC3200 PREMIUM (no brand)
ATI All-In-Wonder 9700 Pro 128 MB
MAXTOR 80GB 7200RPM 2MB-8.5MS U133 OEM QUIET
350 Watt TurboLink New ATX12V P4/AMD PSU

And I will use these components from my current comp:
Viewsonic PF775
SBLive! Platinum with Live! Drive
FPS2000 Digital 4.1

I will mainly play games, do some 3D rendering, running folding@home, and some not-too-serious OCing.
I still have some questions tho:

1. Is P4P800-SE a better choice than the Deluxe one? Or maybe another mobo recommendation?
2. (Prescott + OCing) - Serious cooling = Hot potato??
3. 350W Enough for my system?

Thanks!

1. dont know much about intel mobos
2. the 2.8c will perform better than the 2.8e at stock, but i dont know about oc potential there. i know the 2.8c can give a pretty good run....u may want to get name brand memory if u plan to oc.
3. 350 should be fine

1. i would recommend the IS7/IC7. Asus support is horrible if a problem should arise
2. 2.8C, it performs better and runs cooler
3. if it's a quality PSU, yes. I wouldnt go with the turbolink though

the 2.8c Northwood is alot cooler and I think the performance is almost just as good as a Prescott, or just as good. But I'm not a professional at this, I'm just saying what other people say, so first listen to more people.

Personally, I think the 350W PS is not the best fit. It will run your system but with little or no headroom. You did not mention any opticals - is there no CD or DVD? What if you want to add another harddrive or a couple USB devices?

I think with that horsepower and a gig of memory, you should go for a 400 to 450 BRAND NAME (Antec, Enermax) PS. A good PS will ensure clean power and they usually are a little quieter too.

Finally, don't forget an UPS - you would be a fool to trust your system to just a power strip.

As I said, budget is a factor, i will only use a dvd+r burner/reader and plug my digi-cam once in a while to transfer photos (USB), I mentionned 350W simply because the case i wanted (X-Dreamer), which I really like, comes with that PSU

350 watt power supply should be enough, as long as it's a quality power supply, cheap PSU's lead to nothing but trouble especialy if you want to overclock. prescotts are slower than an equaly clocked northwood in pretty much everything, but do seem to overclock a little more. They also run hotter, but have a higher thermal threshold. Unbranded pc3200 memory won't likely overclock very well either, and the p4p800 may not like it either, I have a P4P800 and it was very picky about what memory I used, didn't like my PC2100 cas2 crucial or centon memory, but worked with kingmax pc3500.

I'm not extremely anti intel, but if you're going that way hit the 2.4c i hear they are pretty easy to overclock to the max

I'm getting in line behind the other people suggesting that you get a proven high-quality brand of power supply like a Fortron, Antec or Enermax. And I would get the Northwood over the Prescott too.

AMD A64 dominates the p4 in gaming and just about everything else. Perhaps if maximizing performance for the buck is your goal you should rethink this choice.

Aside from that the ASUS is very expensive and overrated I might add, the ABIT IS7 is just as fast for half the money. A good PSU as suggested needs to be there. (for the P4 is the enermax 350 is good because it has a massive 26A 12V rail which is where the power hungry pentiums draw from) The Northwood pentiums (C) are superior in everyway to the presshots (E). Thier faster, cooler, require less power.

ok, do you think the Kingston or Corsair (cheapest) are better? Also maybe I will only OC to 3.2 or something, nothing too serious, about the PSU, i might get the antec truepower 380. For the mobo, the price diff between the P4P800 and IS7 is only 20$CAD which is around 17$USD

I think the Antec TruePower380 is a good choice - First off, if it says Antec, it is good, and their specs are conservative - also a good thing. A bonus with the TruePower line, is that they are quieter than many competing supplies - even with its fans running full throttle. I am not too keen on PSs (including the Antecs) that attempt to minimize noise further by slowing down the fans (including case fans - if you plug them into specific connections) - I prefer to buy quality 120mm fans and have them run full speed - which is slower (thus quieter) than standard 80mm fans, but push more air - thus keeping my internals cooler (a necessity when crunching SETI units) but noise levels low.

Don't forget the UPS.

I like what's been said...but your hard drive has been overlooked.

2 MB cache?

Surely some local store will have a sale for a much faster 8 MB cache drive.

My $0.02

While a 8MB cache hard drive is certainly nicer than a 2MB one, its not "much faster". The difference is minimal IMO.

Oops its a typo, im going to get the 8MB cache one, its only 8$CAD more lol
here's the updated components list
Asus P4P800-SE (5PCI) i865PE [S478]
ATI All-In-Wonder 9700 Pro 128 MB
BOXED PENTIUM 4 2.8GHZ-HT 512K 800FSB S478
XMS CORSAIR 400MHZ DDR NO-ECC 512MB C2-3200
WD Caviar 80.0Gb [7200] *8Mb*
Antec Sonata (380W TruePower)

I'm changing it to a northwood (2.8C) instead of prescott, better ram.
Also, I am wondering if the P4P800-SE will perform as well as the P4P800-Deluxe?

There shouldnt' be any noticable difference between the P4P800-SE and the deluxe. Good choice on going with the northwood. I got my 2.8 prescott and it really sucks. I got it up to 3.28Ghz(235mhz fsb) couldn't get it to boot at 240mhz fsb, and even at that speed it still was benching way below my 3.06 ghz northwood, and running a lot warmer (62c under load, compared to 51c). Good thing I just use that computer for watching tv..

Oh and I also heard ppl having problems with this psu/mobo combo: P4p800-e-deluxe with the truepower 380W included with the sonata,
anyone can tell me if the p4p800-se will work with that PSU ?
Also i might switch to OCZ for the rams, im pondering between those 3:
512MB PC-3200 EB DDR Platinum Single
or
512MB PC-4000 EL DDR Single
or
512MB PC-3200 EL DDR Platinum Single

Yup, go Athlon 64. Definitely. If you change your mind and want to go that route, reply, and we give suggestions.
