I have an old IBM 765 laptop sitting around collecting dust. It's like a P100 with 80MB RAM running Win98SE so there's not really much use for it. I have several open PCI slots on my docking station and I was thinking about putting my wireless card and another NIC in the docking station and let my Ubuntu box use a "wired" connection. How would I configure the NIC's so accomplish this?

Is it even possible? I'm eager to learn Linux but I can't because I can't get it to see my network.

Am I missing something? Don't even use the wireless card... just use the wired connection from the docking station... if you can get it installed that is

I want to use the wireless card in the Win98 machine to get the network connection and use the other NIC to share the network connection for the Linux machine.

My router is in another room and can't be moved. This is the only way I can think of to get a "wired" connection for the Linux machine.

put linux on that laptop, you can bridge the 2 interfaces and be done

I can't even get Ubuntu working correctly and now you want me to try another distro like DSL on my ancient laptop? Actually, I tried installed Damn Small Linux on it originally, but there is some issue with the chipset that won't allow the install to finish.

I'd like to leave 98SE on it. I just want to use it to bridge my connection woes for Linux.

have you tried the XFCE version of Ubuntu?

in theory it may be possible to do what you are wanting to do. In theory it is also possible to go two weeks with out eating but why would you want to. that laptop is doing exactly what it should be doing (collecting dust). you must be a glutten for punishment. get a cheap workstation and install IPCOP. it is linux based and will do what you need as far as sharing internet. it is very easy to learn and install. its also free.
