Is this printer right for me?

Before I go and spend $130 on a printer, I want to make sure that it is what I need.

I am basically looking for an all in one type solution that prints quickly for black, and will be easy to copy.

I found the Brother MFC-420CN for $129.98 w/ a $30 MIR = $99.98 final price.

Here is the OM link for the printer

Anyone see problems with this? I had a killed deal on a dell pritner, but then I found out that whenever you need ink, you have to buy it through Dell at their expensive prices!

Wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. Better to get seperates. Canon for printers and Epson for scanners.

If you do want a all-in-one I recommend the Canon mp750, mp760 or mp780 at least the ink is affordable and the scanner is decent quality.

Those printers are well over $100. Have anything comparable to the one I posted above?

That looks more of like a photo printer... not something I require. Basically I just want a decent printer for text, images, and it must have an easy copy feature as well as a scanner.

Canon has always had good text quality. It won't be as good as Laser but at $50 what can you expect. It does have a copy feature though.

The photos ability is just there if you need it.

It seems like for $30 more the Brother printer I posted in my 1st post has more options, plus it does fax (something I don't care too much about, but it might be nice to have).

the brother does use separate carts... retail for about $12.50 per color/ $22 black. however, i find the brother ink jet printers to be frustrating. they take forever to turn on and initialize. they give obscure error messages all of the time. the phrase "i need to make a quick copy" means nothing to these printers. and of course even if you just need to print/copy in black, you better be sure that all of your color carts have ink in them.

that being said.... you'll be hard pressed to get the same features for less than probably $150 from another manufacturer

I just did a copy, first time it was a paper jam because the paper wasn't correctly lined up (now I know the sensitive areas). The 2nd time it copied the page just fine.

And I can get
LC41B x 4
LC41Y x 2
LC41M x 2
LC41C x 2
For $25 shipped.

I would personally get the Canon as the cartridges (OEM or generic) are still cheaper than Brother's. Not to mention, I've played with both machines and the Brother's print quality is pretty junky (at least from the output when you do a Copy) and to boot, it's damn slow.

On a side note, it seems like the OP is adamant about getting the Brother so let it be. He just wanted our support to justify his $130 purchase. All we can do is persuade him but only to a certain degree.

You can get the bci-24 carts for a canon MP130 for a couple dollars.
Not to be rude but the brother should be off the radar screen.

- All you need to do is prove your points...

So you said that the printer is slow to boot... it took 5 seconds for it to turn on..
You said that carts for the canon are cheaper... I can get two carts of each color, and 4 blacks, for around $25 shipped.
And now you said the print quality is bad... but I just printed out a page and it looks perfect.
Someone else mentioned earlier that you need all carts with ink to print in black,I don't care about that.

What other support do you have? I'm listening...

You guys might dislike the Brother printers, but until I hear some good reasons, I can't agree

So, how long have you been working for the Borther corporation?

lol, funny So.

All I am asking is for proof why it isn't any good. Someone else told me her Brother printer totally sucked, but it was a different model. The reviews on this one only really complain about the parts being a bit flimsy. The only part I notice a problem with is the plastic bar that holds the top up when you lift it up. It seems like a pretty crappy part, but it isn't like I am going to sit and move it up and down all day long.

So far, that's the only thing that is bad.

Please, if I am wrong, just prove it. I hate it when people try to make arguements but can't support their point. They come into a thread and say "brother printer sucks" but doesn't explain why.

The canon posted earlier is around $100, but it doesn't have a fax line. Buy.com was selling it for $69, so that is basically $30 less without a fax ( but now they are sold out).

So, please prove your points. How can you expect someone to listen to you without proof?

If you like the printer so much, just go buy the darn thing. Why start up an argument? You didn't come here to listen, you came here just to argue. When a question posted regarding a low-budget inkjet printers, many favor Canon because of its quality and low maintenance cost. I personally don't like Brother because all Brother printers I've used in the past (numerous different models, both budget and high-end models, at work/client sites) indicated poor workmanship and the output quality was not satifactory. If you're happy w/ the Brother printer you're considering buying, go ahead. Who cares what others say if you're happy about the product.

"If you like the printer so much, just go buy the darn thing."
- Doh! You forgot to read the thread... It is best to read the entire thread, before you go make stupid comments. I had to buy the printer to make sure I could get the rebate for it, but I don't mind taking it back within the 14 days if it is a bad printer for the price. "I just did a copy, first time it was a paper jam because the paper wasn't correctly lined up (now I know the sensitive areas). The 2nd time it copied the page just fine."

"Why start up an argument?"
- The post is trying to argue why or why not this printer is best for me....

"You didn't come here to listen, you came here just to argue."
- I came here to find out "Is this printer right for me?"

"Who cares what others say if you're happy about the product. "
- You might be happy now, but when you find out that the printer is one that bums out 6 months down the road, you would have wished that you took some time to find out good info about the printer, and others.

Thanks, it seems to be fine so far. If nobody can prove why it should go back, I won't return it.

Oh, you've already bought the thing...
tough break...but you should have asked BEFORE you bought.
If you take it back now they might not give you a full refund since you've used the carts.

Personally I have 13 Canon inkjets. I've been through HP, Lexmark and Epson. No more.

I have a couple brother faxes that are carbon paper based and they aren't too bad. Brother is not known for inkjets.

I had to buy it to get the rebate in time. I asked to make sure I could take it back and they said I had 14 days.

I asked on here before i bought it, but nobody replied in time to give me a reason not to buy it.

So,

Go read the thread again. You sure don't seem that smart for having 13k+ posts...
