I'm putting together a new gaming rig... I usually don't play games @ the max settings(probably because my computer won't handle it). Here is what I'm thinking of building. I'd like to keep it less than 1k.

New PC
Athlon 64 3200+ venice - Retail - $162
EPoX EP-9NPA+Ultra - Retail - $105.00
CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB (2 x 1024MB) Dual Channel Kit - Already Purchased($147)(heard BF2 likes 2 gigs)
eVGA Geforce 6800GS - $195.00
Antec SLK3000B case - $50
FSP Group (Fortron Source) AX450-PN 450W Power Supply - Retail - $49.99
NEC Black 3550A DVD-RW - $38.99

Planning to use onboard sound and onboard lan, and already have a new 200GB hard drive.

Total: ~750

Old PC
Athlon XP 1800+
Geforce 3 ti200
768MB RAM

Yeah, I know... my current pc sucks

you'd probably want to get a cheap sound card... older turtle beach and creatives can be had for cheap.

Your old PC doesn't suck, it just not a gaming system anymore..

The problem with building anything right at this moment, is AMD is in the midst of a socket change. Any day they are going to release their new socket standards, so that will make upgrading in say a year or two almost impossible.

I'm in the same boat, as I really wanted a gaming system, but realized the predicament..

my solution:

Abit NV8 (skt 754 / nf4-x / pci-express / single channel ddr)
AMD Sempron (skt 754 / 64bit / 128k L2 / 2600+ 1.6GHz)
XFX 6600 DDR2 pci-express

total $264

this way I still get a sweet gaming system now, but don't waste to much money on a platform I know will be outdated in the next few months, and I can sell the components (at a loss) when I upgrade in 6 months.

The thing that is really awesome about the new semprons is they are essentially A64s in skt 754 flavor and Sempron clothing.. not to mention they oc like you wouldn't believe. They run super cool as well due to the 90nm process.

I already have a stick of Corsair XMS 4400 (Samsung TCCD) 512MB, which is a perfect ocing companion. but even if you don't plan on ocing, this combo will still pack a mean punch.

Not to mention your Skt 939 board would be a pin short to support that processor.. Maybe Opteron Guy just wasn't paying very close attention to that detail.

opteron guy, according to this pic of your pc, it is not currently in dual channel mode. both sticks have to be in the same channel color.

Supposedly

I have a Neo2, which claims that exact same thing, but it works in dual channel in mismatched color slots too
I'd assume it's the same thing with the Neo4...

It's all good, except the video card. Get the X800GTO2 and unlock it to 16 pipes. It'll totally pwn the 6800GS.

I don't think you should do the math with the current computer parts, and instead redue the math with how much it will actually cost to upgrade the system.

I don't feel confident with epox boards, personally. But besides that I think your system looks good.

don't listen to him doug. the gto2 is more expensive and your 6800gs will still rape or near rape the gto2. AT tested the two for itself. check out its review on the 6800gs

The link you gave me says it's socket 940. The 939 is out of stock.

So the general consensus seems decent. I'm thinking this computer will last me at least a few years right? Especially if I'm still running what I have now Go athlon xp 1800!

Is it a gauranteed unlock to 16 pipes?
