Holy shit, zanejohnson is still alive. The once small potatoes resident pill popping techie schmuck. Good to see you're still kicking man.
*devil's advocate*
So if this a credit card scam, who ultimately loses out? It ultimately falls onto the credit card company to eat the cost. Maybe some gets shifted to the retailer, but most of it does not. Credit card giants lose more money in 3 days with shifting treasury rates than they lose in 1 year of fraud. Their losses due to fraud have very little to no connection to the rates you pay. If you pay any rates to credit card companies, you're a jackass anyway.
*still devils advocate*
Why would you spend any of your limited time and resources contacting the "authorities"? Let them come to you. Chances are that they never will. The msnbc article is insightful, until it tries scare tactics to make you believe the black suits and sun glasses are going to show up at your door and take your cpu!
What happens if you DO report it? You give back the product and now YOU'RE out the money instead of a credit card company, a large retailer or even some person 1,000 miles away that you don't know and probably never will know? Why would I ever choose that option? Do I get a boy scout merit badge if I do?
*devils advocate off, mostly*
This is how I, and the majority of others handle it.... Hey, my new CPU, sweet! *plug into board*. It works great, just what I wanted. *throw out box and packing slip* *play game or whatever*.
The louder you are the more attention you garner.
