There isn't much you can do. The grades may be suspicious but you're not likely to get anywhere unless you have solid proof that the professor limited women to B's or less. It sucks to see this kind of attitude and discrimination. I saw it as a student and as a professor. The best things she can do at this point probably are 1) make her opinion known and 2) prove him wrong.

They seem to think I care about many things...so I'm guessing your wrong. They just happen to be mature and realize there are many more important things to worry about than one person telling them they can't do physics.

that, and 99.9% of women truly dont give a crap about physics, math, etc, etc.

Thanks...

seems like free speech to me, unless it can be proved he sabotaged the grades of his female students...

No women in his lab got a "A" they all got a "B"

Maybe they didn't cut it?

But yeah he is a bit of an ass in saying that. But how many 'famous' women Physists can you recall right now?

Lots of women in Biology though!

My CS class lots of women and no lectuerer hacking at them. A few of the women often score the highest score! This one girl ALWAYS gets the top mark without fail. She is definatley talented.

No hot ones, anyway. And, I use physics in a general sense.

It think she's proven him wrong. She's already has a job with Lockheed Martin; doing orbital trajectory analysis. She's also the in the top 10% of her class. It's just seems fvcked up that they would do that. They're already under alot of stress as it is.

Oh please. She and the other women in the glass need to grow up. The adult thing to do would be to suck it up and prove him wrong.

A lawsuit is a bit much, considering no real harm was done. A letter to the dean might be in order, since that is definitely inappropriate, unprofessional behaviour.

we don't know how many women are even in the class, much less what the grade distributions were. Maybe that prof only gives 1 or 2 A's per quarter.

My Military History professor called one girl a "bulldog ***" in front of the whole class once. The same guy also called this patchouli-stinking hippie kid a "granola bar" (that one I actually enjoyed).

when i was a CS major i found that girls got preferential treatment...one of the best looking ones could hardly program, hardly understand what a class was, barely seemed to grasp simple concepts...yet made it all the way through senior year with B's and better grades...
The only thing was she was the 1 of the 3 girls in the program and by far the hottest...and it was clear a lot of guys drooled over her (myself included)...so it kinda became clear almost that she might have been "encouraged" to stick around and keep the boys distracted at times...

but anyways subject at hand...it does sound like something wrong is going on, i say let the school paper know, let them investigate, and if an article gets written up and theres really something going on then the dean and others will have to take notice

I would suggest that she and her colleagues (both men and women) write an open letter describing the situation. They should then post it everywehere on the Internet and send it to every physics journal and newspaper in the United States.

I am guessing that the university will get a whiff of this in short time and will try to recitfy the situation to save some face.

Seriously, if it bothers her that much, report him to the dean. Don't overreact like way too many Americans already do.

Sometimes, that's the only way to get their attention.

If they can't 100% prove that he said it and everything on the paper they're posting, they will be sued for libel and slander. I'd be very careful going this route.

LOL

I find that quite funny. I just hope she isn't programming anything that I'll use! In fact I hope I don't program anything that I use!

"Women can't do nuclear physics".

He might be right in the general sense. Last I checked no women nukes in any service...no women nuke professors.

Nothing will happen to this professor. Professors, especially the ones on tenior track (sorry spelled wrong I know) can get by with everything short of murder. She had best get ready for the work place. In the field of science, things are very competitive! and that is just the way it has always been. Once she is working on a job, MAYBE a lawsuit, but in college.... good luck with that....

The guy is entitled to his (sexist) opinion. I wouldn't waste the effort opposing him. When there are conflicts between a student and a professor, the student almost always loses. Anyway, how is this guy hindering your fiance's progress? Is he refusing to mark her work, refusing to teach her? She would be better off seeking out a more progressive mentor/ professor, and putting her energy into her work (as opposed to putting her energy into a personal/ political struggle against the sexist professor).

Maybe because if the learning environment hurts your self esteem, and you feel like the teacher isn't putting any effort into teaching you, then you won't get much out of the class.

Exactly, a lot of women have switched majors because of this.
