Is this STOCK SB cooling?

If you're going to overclock and/or want something quiet, yes. Just make sure it's 1155 or 1156 compatible. Plenty of options out there.

My E8400 right now (slightly overclocked to 3.6) is passively cooled right now (though having a SFF setup, my power supply fan is right over my heatsink, which makes this possible). Idle is 31C, load is around 65C.

So yes, I believe it should be possible.

It really makes no sense to have a case fan, but no fan on the CPU. Better to have a really quiet or undervolted fan on the CPU and no case fan, IMO.

But really, you can put 2 or 3 undervolted or PWM fans at various locations get pretty decent performance. You really want a fan blowing directly through the CPU heatsink. You need a fan somewhere, it makes sense for it to be where lots of heat needs moved.

Shame thats not stock for the K series, AMD had a sweet cooler with their opterons a while ago, copper heatpipes too, i had one with my opty 170.

this will be great for SFF users. We'll be able to use smaller coolers like Silverstone's NT-07 while cramming everything inside tiny mini itx cases.

Agree but not if it adds to the price. When I got a 212+ for $15, I don't want to have Intel effectively add in $50 to give me the same thing.....

I searched about 10 reviews to find a reviewer who clearly stated that.
So that extra 100 dollars gets you that as well.

The Core i7-2600K comes with a new fan–heat sink unit similar to the one introduced with the Core i7-980X last year, and that requires a special bracket to be installed underneath the motherboard; this is easy if you're assembling a system from scratch, but not if you want to replace a chip in one you've already built.

Hmm I didnt get that impression, but who knows. I guess I could sell the 212+ cooler then (or sell the Intel one)

The Frys and Microcenters I went to did not have the processors in their stock room. Supposed to come in by Friday I believe.

I think the left is for the 45W SFF desktop and right is 65W SFF desktop. 35W probably uses the same thing as the 45W.

Because the major difference between the 2500k and 2600k is hyperthreading and with 4 cores most games do not utilize hyperthreading by any meaningful degree. In other words the 2600k does not offer very much at all over the 2500k in gaming.
