It requires a crystal ball for the small market teams. They have to be able to continually wave a magic wand and replenish the young talent that is destined to leave for free agency.Originally posted by: RabidMongoose
I don't think a small market team will ever be able to establish a dynasty, unless it has very rare and special circumstances.
The Marlins won't be in the World Series next year.
Now if they had a $160 million payroll then they would win the WS next year.

The A's have halfway done this, but it's eventually going to catch up with them.
One thing Yankees' fans have no concept of is losing home grown stars. The idea that they couldn't afford to keep Jeter, Rivera, Posada, Bernie, Pettitte, etc. is just completely outside their realm of possibilities.
Yeah, the Marlins were also lucky to have Willis and Cabrerra come out of nowhere and emerge like they did. It looks like Willis is already coming back to earth, I don't see them putting together a season like this again.Originally posted by: RabidMongoose
The A's were extremely lucky to have 3 aces develop at about the same time.
The Marlins are estimated to need to spend about $70 million to keep the current team together - I don't think they'll be able to do that. I think we'll definitely see Castillo leave, maybe Burnett will be non-tendered along with Encarnacion. Lowell gets a huge increase in arbitration this year and they'll probably try to keep him.

Lowell has no chance of staying....the kid Cabrerra is a third baseman by trade...
They should try to keep Burnett around - he is better than Beckett if 100% healthy...probably won't be a factor again until 2005 though...
I haven't heard this... but if they do, put it in Miami right off the bay... call it Estefan CoveOriginally posted by: Storm
Arent the Marlins trying to get a new stadium? Winning the WS sure helps.
