Hi, I'm buying about 20 items for a new comp. I've shopped around and it has pretty much come down to either Tiger or Newegg. I have put together the same shopping cart from both vendors and Newegg would cost me $2356.66, Tiger - $2015.63(Total/Before MIR). I live in CA so I don't have to pay tax on Tiger, but if I buy from Newegg I would have to pay nearly $200 in tax(I pay enough tax already). Tiger shipping will cost me $102 for UPS Ground, Newegg - $76 for Fedex saver. Is Tiger really that bad? I hear bad things about their return policy, will I regret this?

Shopping Cart

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ (San Diego)
Asus A8N SLI Deluxe
CoolerMaster Wave Master Black Mid-Tower ATX
eVGA GeForce 6800 GT
Corsair TWINX Dual Channel 1024MB PC3200 DDR 400MHz
Seagate 160GB SATA-150
OCZ Powerstream 420w

ugh, too lazy to list the rest.. howzitlook?

i would go with the ocz 520mod stream. you have an sli board that psu might be cutting it close. the new nvidia cards are gonna require more power. yes ive heard some bad stories about tigerdirect i can understand the tax thing. you could just take your chances i guess i dont know what other options you have.

You have to consider, on the net things can get blown up. Tiger Direct isn't such a bad company, they're rated decent here where I check out online stores:
ResellerRatings

EDIT: Sounds like their CS isn't so good, though.

At reseller ratings check all 3 out and read the reviewer comments. The comments should help you decide. IMHO the positive Tiger ratings seem oddly brief, and the negative seem pretty bad. Here are the overall ratings.

Tiger 7.54
Newegg 9.62
Monarchcomputers 9.34

I've had very good luck buying higher-end refurbished systems there, but I wouldn't bother buying components from them.

The only thing I didn't like about Tiger was the obscene shipping price. They used a hugely oversized box, with my item in another box inside it.

I've never bought anything from them, but my dad has. The only time we've had trouble was once when they said an order he'd made hadn't come through...but they've never overcharged him or anything. If it's that much cheaper, I'd buy from them.

My source is a computer maintenance professional in Central Florida - and he won't touch Tiger Direct because he is convinced that they deal primarily in gray market hardware.

I've had a LOT of bad experiences with TigerDirect in the past. That said, they seem to be better nowadays (I haven't ordered anything from them in 2 years and never will again).

Agree. I've never delt with tigerdirect, but their previous rebate and shipping (cost) issues tell me more than enough about their company culture. I'll continue to reward the company (by giving them my business) that does things the right way. I wont' buy things from a company that screws their customers to see what they can get away with. Just my $.02.

Edit: Be sure to check cheif value, Neweggs sister site, sometimes the same item is cheaper on one site or the other. Also, don't rule out Monarch or zipzoomfly.

I didn't have any problems with them when I bought my mobo/CPU combo...it was quick, cheap, and easy.

newegg!!!
You can always split your cart... trust the tiger on some of the stuff which differ considerably (ur def.) in price.
I have only heard of Tiger Direct being good in selling refurbished, somewht old stuff. I bought a video card long ago from them, and was pretty satisfied with the experience. Then again, didnt have to deal with CS or aything for it.
pricewatch.com, ebay. Put some time into shopping around, you can def. save some (if not a lot).

I've had good luck with all 3. Tiger's return policy isn't the best (got hit with a restocking fee, but it wasn't from a bad part, just a stupid double order on my part---couldn't cancel one item in time), the shipping charges are high, and the rebates are S L O W.... That said, you can find some deals now and again. Just make sure you shop around and compare prices.

Newegg is great, but I did not have any problem with tiger the one time I ordered from them. Shipping is somewhat expensive but not unreasonably so. (I've seen some computers listed on ebay with $1,300 shipping.) If the price difference is that big, I'd go with the cheaper.

At last, I ended up splitting the order between monarch and newegg. Didn't want to wait for tiger's slowass ups ground shipping(2nd day is toomuch$). I am also looking for a good 19" LCD for gaming, any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm thinking about the Samsung Syncmaster 930b / 8ms, but you can't adjust the height or turn it. Has anyone tried this monitor? Thank you all for your advice, it has been very helpful.

If anything goes wrong, have fun dealing with TigerDirect or pretty much any other company out there. You will wish you spent that extra money. The headache, heartache and perhaps loss of money due to not being able to RMA/getting charged up the azz will make it clear to you why you should have bought at newegg.. .

Shrug, up to you. Buying for newegg should be a rule for first time builders though.

I've managed to return quite a bit of products I wasn't satisfied with from newegg but trying do that elsewhere and see how far they're willing to bend backward to please us?
Most companies charge restocking fee to exchange defective products so they can make more money? I won't deal with best buy or any other retail store that are a pain to find a good deal and quite a hassle to drive their just to buy a few thing once in a while.
