Is too much Vitamin C bad for you?

I had a pretty bad cold 2 months ago, thus I am trying to pack up as much Vitamin C as I can.

So I am eating like 5-6 grapefruits everyday + 2-3 tangerines. Is packing too much Vitamin C bad for me?

Not like that, no.

Eat as many as you want.

Just FYI, there are many fruits and vegetables that contain much more vitamin C than citrus fruits. Not really sure why they became associated with Vitamin C. Probably advertising by the citrus growers lobby, lol.

Try Kiwi.

What I heard is that you can't get too much vit. C unless you are eating like a bottle per day.

I don't think eating lots of C containing fruits is going to hurt you. If he was taking megadoses of synthetic vitamin C, I would've said yes.

Whatever your body does not process gets passed thru your system. You cannot OD on vitamin C.

Oh well, what I am getting is fully natural Vitamin C. And I am sure 6 grapefruits+3 tangerines dont total up to a bottle

vitamin c is water soluble(sp) however i HAVE heard that too much vitamin c in tablet or pill form can actually give you stones (kidney or otherwise)... not sure on truth of that

No.. it is not.. and to be honest... well the amount of Vitamin C in fruits is not as much as people would think. By the time they are picked and transported and shelved and purchased there is hardly anything left. other sources of vitamin C are: green peppers, citrus fruits and juices, strawberries, tomatoes, broccoli, turnip greens and other greens, sweet and white potatoes, and cantaloupe. Most other fruits and vegetables contain a small amount of vitamin C. Fish and milk contain small amounts.

But oyu can just go to GNC and get a bottle. And you can eat them as much as you like, you will not suffer anything unless you eat dozens of them.

Vitamin C is one vitamin that if taken in excess, is still harmless. The body will just reject the excess and flush it.


HOWEVER, I remember hearing once that CONTINUED daily excess, over a period of months and months, can lead to an unhealthy habit of rejection by the body. That, however, was just a claim if I remember correctly.

Time and time again I have heard it was harmless

Eating the fruits is orders of magnitude better than just taking pure ascorbic acid in pill form. It's not really even comparable.

I bet 6 grapefruits and 3 tangerines don't even equal a typical 1000mg, 1667% RDV vitamin C horse pill.

Let's see. Half a medium grapefruit contains ~40mg Vitamin C. So eating 6 would only be ~480mg.

One medium tangerine contains ~25mg, so that's another ~75mg, for a total of ~555mg.

For comparison, 1 kiwi, skinned, contains 89mg.

And for even more comparison, one cup of guava fruit contains ~300mg. :Q

Here is a good link about taking too much Vitamin C. After I read the book by Linus Pauling I thought that it would be a good idea to overdose but there seems to be inconclusive results, there might be harmful effects.

Cool, well, since these are natural food, do I have to watch for my weight? I am in a good shape right now, so I wouldn't wanna gain weight w/ fruits

You'll never gain weight by eating too many fruits and vegetables.

They just aren't caloricallyconfused: ) dense enough.

If you take too much vitamin C you will pass it and not thru your urine... well not most of it anyway.

When I am sick I take 3-5 or more grams per day until I am better. If you are taking too much it will have a laxative like effect and you should cut back. I normally take 2 or 3 grams a day even when I am not sick just because it makes me feel good.

You can't overdose on vitamin C.

vitamins are water soluble, which means excess will essentially be pissed out and such. however, its still advisable you dont megadose on a certain vitamin because it can cause vitamin defeciencies in other vitamins, creating a vitamin imbalance. thats why you should take a vitamin c complex if you want to bulk up on a specific vitamin c.

so, no, nothing will happen with you eating that much grapefruit, and nothing will probably happen either if you at 10g of vitamin c from 20 capsules of vitamin c. the question is why.

I think so, too much Vit C will give u Kidney stone.
Everything that too much is bad.
