Is "trance" music? Does it take talent?

With all the hoopla about the talentless pop singers, how do you all feel about Paul Oakenfold, Paul van Dyk, etc.?

I listen primarily to classical, "trance", groups like Delerium, Enigma, etc.. Many argue with me regarding my love for Delerium saying, "that's not real music", but that's a moot point not worth arguing.

Personally, I can't understand why there are some who don't appreciate listening to classical, but there are those that can't understand why I do.

Point. It's all relative. WWF isn't 'true' wrestling, it's a performance. Britney Spears may not be an exceptional musician, but she's a good performer (hence all the media interest).

in a whole electronic music actually harder to produce than other music
not only do you need a lot of expensive equiptment and knowledge of how to use it thus needing musical background in many areas.
thats what i think anyways.

kat. <-- plays with fruity loops and thinks producing music is tricky even with simple programs

it's pretty hard, takes talent. the Pauls are talented, so is Digiweed.

yeah, i say it takes a good deal of talent. for those that might not have it, <or heard of it> you need to get a hold of a copy of "mtv's music generator" for playstation (yah, i know it had mtv on it...swallow your pride, it is actually a cool game/program). Basically you get to create your own mixes starting with just samples. it makes it a good deal easier than most programs out there for pc, but still, it still takes a lot of time and talent to create something that doesn't sound like crap. oakenfold gets his props from me

really though, oakenfold doesn't produce. he mixes with turntables and remixes sometimes. PVD does alot more producing. John Digweed doesn't really produce either. if you have picked up a CD by Oakenfold or Digweed i'd say that is was a mix. These guys are DJs not producers. There are soem that cross the line. take Nick Warren for instance. I was reading an article on him, i believe it was in mix mag, and they asked about him remixing and actually producing songs [He is 1/2 of Way Out West]. His reply was that when they remixed, it took 2 weeks tops, and that was an unusually long time for them to spend on remixing a song. OTOH they had some tracks that they have been producing for an album that had been in the works for 2 years. that tells you the difference between remixing and producing. But don't get a DJ set confused with producing.

Too bad the PSX only has two megs of RAM, my "complex" mixes crash the MTV Music Generator :Q

I agree with Syst3m, it takes a lot of talent to produce, mixing is in the bag. A four year old could place a vinyl on a turntable and get it spinning, but making the music is a different story. I'm not downing on any DJs, just stating the obvious

Do any of you use Rebirth or Hammerhead? They're really fun beat/trance mixing programs. Hammerhead is freeware, and Rebirth must be paid for after a 15 minute trial. I enjoy playing around with both, and "producing" little beats and such..

People call "Rap" music, so I don't see why trance couldn't be called music as well.

if they threw any of us into a music studio...
we couldnt even reproduce anything close to what those djs have made...
i think its all talent and practice...like dancing...
how many people in here can really dance? who here has rythmn? i sure dont...
if it didnt take talent..then half the world would be making music and getting paid a fortune to perform at raves...

lets get one thing straight being a dj and a producer are two very different things
funny how sometimes djs get more credit than producers sometimes.
producers are gods.
djs are minsters.

kat. <-- preys to dj. funk umong others

yes DJs are ministers...BUT...many producers have DJ in their name

trance does take alot to make
have you tried sitting behind a keyboard(but the big time trance makers have a massive studio) and making some tunes? its hard...
mixing mew mixes arent very hard...just a good sense of hearing and rythmn
to play with mixing, go to shockwave.com
you can make new mixes of current songs and record them and listen to them over and over...

Yes it is, and yes it does... otherwise why isn't every one a producing great electronic music or great Hip-Hop. Don't deny a person's talent soley because you don't like what they produce. A person could simply strum a guitar and it will move someone. Anyway I don't like Oakefold too much, but Van Dyk is amazing. You should check out Oliver Lieb (aka LSG)... great producer as well.

<< producers are gods. djs are ministers. >>

Nice analogy, they both need each other. I solely DJ now but like to learn more of the producing side. And the better DJ's soon become good producers. I think if Beethoven were alive now he'd be making electronic music.

I don't like people who think DJing doesn't take talent. I'm not even that advanced a DJ, the hardest stuff I do is beatmixing, but the average person couldn't do that. I see pro DJs doing wild stuff on turntables, and it's insane how much better than me they are. Compare that to the average person, who then claims it doesn't take talent...

its not easy to be a dj im not denying that.
sometimes i play around on my friends' tables, beat matching is a lot easier when you can just push a button on an expensive mixer and it spits out the bpm.

i think its about time that amazing producers that arent djs get more credit.
