Is Win10 designed to collect lots of meta-data?

Browsing history, personal info, etc?
Why are people feeling like Win10 is a trojan horse OS, so to speak?

Because they can't be bothered to turn off the data collection in Win 10, and they'd rather have the drama?

Yeah, there are lots of things to turn off in Win10. Google is your friend.

What's most amusing is that those who are concerned about it are the people who know enough to be able to turn most (or all...?) of it off easily. I guess it feels better to rant about it on the internet.

MS says they don't collect that stuff, there is no real way to prove they do unless someone can decrypt the telemetry data they are collecting. You can either choose to believe what MS says or not.

Most people are misunderstanding what is being collected or just making stuff up. For example, browsing history is collected in the sense that your browsing history can be sync'd between Win10 devices. That requires that they collect and store that data in the cloud, but it is for your use not MS. The alarmists will take that information and claim that MS is spying on you.

By default it does. There are ways to turn it off and/or block it, but my feeling is that if I need to do stuff like that just so I can feel safe using my own computer, then that OS does not belong on my computer in first place. I switched to Linux around the time Windows 8 came out and don't regret it. I have a win7 machine for gaming but it's usually off. i disabled windows updates on it to be safe as nothing stops MS from forcing win10 or telemetry on Win7. Though if I wanted to be really safe I could probably just put it on another vlan and have lot of outbound traffic restrictions.

We live in an age where we really really really can't trust ANY company now. If they don't leak your data because of their incompetence, they leak it because they are making money off it.

Windows 10 is free for the same reason Facebook is free. You are the product.

Forcing Win10? Come on. Data mining is nothing new, and if you're that concerned about it then you can take measures to mitigate it or avoid the product altogether. Disabling updates isn't really the way to go, you want the latest vulnerabilities patched and so on. You can always control what comes in and out of your connection by fine tuning what's happening at the router level and by using wireshark captures on your device to analyze traffic on its way out. etc etc etc.

I think things definitely tend to get blown way out of proportion. That's not to say that data doesn't get collected, it most certainly does. But a lot of scary conclusions are being drawn without any actual information about anything.

Essentially, think of your local profile in NT, now roaming over the "cloud". Same concept, slightly different implementation and devices. Big whoop.

No wonder web browsing on my htpc in windows 10 is slow as dial up, using all that bandwidth to datamine. It was fine before the upgrades, now to disable the data mining.

And that is a BAD thing. I don't want any of that to be on someone else's server. Not to mention if my internet goes down I don't want stuff to stop working because it's relying on some outside service.

Though you can disable that remote profile stuff... for now.

Google does history syncing forever now, and it is not a big deal for any of their users... Still you can opt to not use their browser, even on their OS. Here as others have stated there's lack of transparency of what is being shared, and feeling that you're not much in control of your PC anymore...

This.

Completely.

I've run every version of Windows except 10, the OS sucks plus spyware thanks but no thanks.

PS: All those "OFF" settings don't really work. MS has already admitted.

Windows 10 as it is now seems like a tablet/phone os designed to push users to the Windows store , while getting to know you . Windows 7 x 64 seems like a desktop os , at least to me . Thankfully there exist many ways now to avoid the pungent ms ' upgrade' .

What exactly does a company like MS (or whoever they outsource to) do with all the data they collect on INDIVIDUALS? Or do they only collect it for more general reports on tendencies and likes, etc. for MS users in general?

I mean, would I have to worry about what they know specifically about ME and that I visit thisstore.com for purchases twice a month or that I watched Chicago.Fire.xvid.s04e02? I don't get the big deal if I'm just one in 10 million and they know about "us". Unless they do something to me specifically (and I'm not talking about targeted ads), why would I want to be worried? Would they collect CC info I input into websites (they won't use it anyway and this would be a huge legal issue for them)?

Wrong. I use Win10 daily and not ONCE have I been "pushed" to the Windows store. I visited it ONCE voluntarily to see what there was to see (not much) and have NEVER gone back.

Quit spreading unsubstantiated FUD

Same here.

The ones that believe in some Microsoft conspiracy remind me of the 9/11 Truther types.

You seem smart enough that I think if you spent another day googling what you're talking about, you'd come to a less paranoid conclusion. It's meta data at best being 'shared' and you can turn everything off.

But if he googles... then the google will know things about him...
