XP is for everyone, just ask Bill.

I'd recommend it any day. Just like Blue Weasel said, stability is great.

It is not really an upgrade if you are already have Win2k pro, but is you must have MS product and is running Win95 or ME then it is worth while.

I see in your sig you`re using 98SE,I went from 98 to XP and it was well worth it,I had pretty good stability on my 98 PC but my XP PC blows it away on stability, you also have a lot more features in XP as well.Your PC specs are good enough for XP so I say go for it .

You`ve the choice of FAT32 or NTFS with XP(I recommend NTFS) plus being it`s a NT based OS like 2K ,you`ve that extra stability. Also I guess it won`t be long before Bill decides to stop official support for 98,at least with XP you`ll have a longer life span OS wise.

Regarding support for 98, check some of the MS webpages, already phaing support for it out :frown:

Anyway, for the upgrade I just did because I put together a new box and liked some of the media features and stuff that comes with XP. If you were running anything other than 98SE I'd say you should upgrade now, otherwise play around with it and see if you like it.

Definitely run it in a dual-boot configuration (XP will let you do this during the upgrade process). Then you can test it, make sure you like it, make sure your stuff runs on it, etc.

I love the OS as far as stability and features. But I hate some of the problems I have with hardware upgrades (See my other rant thread).

I was running it on my son's PC: a Celeron 266/400 with 512 of ram. I upgraded to an Athlon 1.2 with 512 and now have to reinstall due to the hardware change (grrr). But XP ran fine on the 400mhz box. My XP2000+ system loves it, of course. heh

XP is for anyone that wants increased productivity, enhanced compatibilty, more speed, and 25x more stabilty than Win9X.
And I got my Full Version of Windows XP Professional thru the GO PRO deal for only $50!

am i the only one who's disappointed in xp? it doesn't seem any more/less stable than 2k. yeah, there's more eye candy, but after 2 days, you turn off all of that fade/animation stuff cos the novelty has worn off, and the delays get annoying...

it boots faster than 2k, but since i reboot infrequently, this is pretty inconsequential.

i would have liked to have seen virtual desktops built into the os...

Same reason why I am also still with 2k... not much difference between the two to make me want to upgrade. A version jump from NT kernel 5.0 to 5.1? WHY, FOR WHAT?

There is no reason to stick with Win98 just for the sake of gaming. Go with Windows XP on a NTFS partition for much more stability, as well as better security.

Whats the difference between OEM and retail?

1. About $100+

2.Retail gets you phone tech support from Microsoft. OEM does not.

3. You could also get the upgrade version(Around $99-ish) and still do a clean install.

Small clarification: to do a clean install, you must have a valid upgrade medium (aka Windows 98, ME, or 2000 CD). It will ask to see this during the install.

i agree with the others , xp is alot more stable than 98 and companies are starting not to offer driver support for 98 (ati has stopped this ) and i actually find games run smoother on xp - cant say faster but definately smoother.

one thing though - if possable i would recommmend upgradind to 512 memory since xp demands more than 98 does.

Yup, but that doesn't mean that he has the disk for it; around here you can never assume stuff like that.

I'm also thinking about the upgrade from 98se to xp pro, and i found the full upgrade version for $43. I have a real 98 cd, so it seems like a good cheap upgrade for me.

Note that the price is only for school staff and what not.
