Athlon Thunderbird 1.33 GHz w/ 1GB PC133 at home
P4 1.8+ GHz w/ 512MB DDR333? at work (this is the minimal...most are now above this spec)

I'm a programmer so speed of computers is pretty low on the list for me. Once my IDE starts up (VS .NET is fast... NetBeans takes a year or two) I'm good to go. All that I request is that I have a high quality monitor capable of 1280x960 that presents text well.

Compilation times are really minor. If I save 5 or 10 seconds with a newer comp its not worth it to me.

Wow, back from the dead thread. Anyways, since the original start of this thread my at home computer is better than the work one now.

No, the PC at work is a Pentium 2. My home PC is a AMD Athlon 64 3200. I'm due for a new work PC though.

As are we at my company

I'm part of the rollout of the new machines (3Ghz P4, 512Mb, 80Gb HD) as well as writing half the core code for the PC configurator.

FYI, Progress sucks.

[Edit] Nuts to that, I'm actually writing all of the core code, and then spending time showing the boss how it works, while masking my "amusing" comments.

Definitely not. Most of the computers at work suck..and the one that doesn't isn't too useful at the moment.

i voted yes ... although only 1 of my 2 computers here at work is better.

i put yes because my main developing maching here is Dual 2Ghz, 1Ghz RAM, GeForce FX 5400. the only downside is its a MAC, but it's not that bad now that I'm used to it. I still would not trade a normal PC for a Mac, even w/these specs. at home i have an xp 2400+ w/1.5Ghz RAM and a Saphire Radeon 9500NP @ 9700. oh, and my windows machine here is only like 1Ghz w/512mb RAM.

heck no...we are pretty much in the pre-dos phase at work.

At home I run Win ME. BSOD is the best!

Well, my desktop @ home is better then my desktop @ work. But I use some much better systems at work (20 node cluster, 2.6GHz dual xeons, 2GB RAM, GB ethernet, 3TB server). I have access to a much bigger cluster as well ... I think they're up to about 300 nodes now, but I don't use it much.

when i was working during the summer, the work computer was POS.. so I ended up bringing my home computer to work. Didn't really affect me that much though since I could use my dad's computer, and I had dialup back home.
